On Saturday 4th December, on a very wet day in Rome, there was a march against
the racist Bossi-Fini Law which introduces severe new restrictions for
immigrants and against the "CPTs", the detention centres where "illegals" are
held in appalling conditions before being forcefully expelled from the country.
The law, part of the move to a "Fortress Europe", is marked by the attitude
that uncontrolled immigration is a threat to public order and, rather than
being exclusive in its treatment of migrants, is downright repressive. Among
some of the changes it introduces is to tie immigrants' residency permits to
their work contracts, making them immediately illegal if they should lose their
jobs. More details of the law can be found at
http://www.ainfos.ca/04/dec/ainfos00130.html . Despite the terrible weather,
the march was very well attended, with estimates of numbers ranging from 20,000
to 50,000. Starting out from Piazza della Repubblica, we marched through
central Rome arriving around 3 hours later at the final destination, near
Piazza Venezia. There was huge participation by migrants: large numbers of
Africans together with a good number of southern Asians, Roma, South Americans
and even a section of Chinese. Many of these had come from various parts of
Italy, north and south, including a large number organized in the Sicilian
Anti-Racist Network (RAS).

Anarchists too participated in the march, but in the absence of a specifically
anarchist sector were mixed in with various other sectors, many marching with
the RAS. Organizations present included the FdCA, FAI, FAS and USI.
