Anarchist Movement, Groups and Organizations Last year
various homeless groups were given the green light to go ahead
and open the Modesto Homeless emergency shelter on 9th and
D Street in Modesto, against the wishes of devolopers, the
Gospel Mission Shelter, and others. The line was that if things
went smoothly and nothing bad happened, then the building
could be used throughout the year to house people. With the
help of community support, and volunteers, the shelter went off
great, with hundereds staying there, and 50% of them were
people with jobs, showing the effects of bad jobs and poverty in
the city. The building however soon was shut down at the end
of the winter, and was turned into a day center used by the
Salvation army. While the day center was a good place for
people to go to use computers, phones, and get mail, a shelter
was even more needed, as people are forced to sleep in parks
and risk confrontations with police.
Now the city has opened up the shelter once more, and again is
repeating the same line that it might be opened longer if things
go well. This continued line of maybes is because the city
council is getting resistance from property owners about
homeless people being around their businesses. People must
come first, please take the time to go to the City Council's
website, and call them, (under the 'City Council' section), or
email them and let them konw that the shelter must be kept
open.
Modesto homeless need a non-authoritarian shelter run by and
for the homeless and concerned citizens.
