CITY HALL CRACKS DOWN ON PANHANDLERS UNION: POLICE TARGET LEADER
The City of Ottawa and police continue to attack the
panhandlers' union and homeless activists.
On Tuesday, Ottawa Mayor Bob Chiarelli left negotiations
with the activists on Tuesday and immediately issued a threat
to evict them from their camp at the human rights monument near
City Hall. During the meeting, unknown to the activists meeting
with the mayor, the police arrested a protest organizer, Jane Scharf.
Early Friday morning, as the city slept, the police
tore down the homeless camp and took the protesters to
a shelter. When Jane Scharf sought to meet with the
mayor on Friday afternoon, police arrested her again,
keeping her in jail over the weekend. Her trial is on
Wednesday, September 1.

The City of Ottawa continues to mar its integrity by
using coercion instead of negotiation to deal with its
most vulnerable people.
>
The IWW International Solidarity Commission supports
the efforts of the panhandlers' union to organize the
homeless to speak for themselves and demand an end to
the Safe Streets Act. This act gives the police more
powers to harass and abuse the homeless of Ontario.

The Commission is calling on all IWW members to email
or telephone Mayor Chiarelli. The Commission demands
that the City of Ottawa:
>
- release Jane Scharf and drop all charges against
her,
- stop police harassment of panhandlers and homeless
people, and
- negotiate in good faith with the homeless activists
for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
