Direct from Toronto's hip hop underground the politically charged "Dope
Poets Society" will kick off TAG's 3rd Annual Festival Against Poverty & Oppression.
TAG is a member of the Ontario Common Front: a coalition of anti-poverty
groups from across Ontario demanding that the Liberals raise the welfare rates by 40%.
The next day (28th), TAG will join other militant sister anti-poverty
groups from across Ontario to challenge the Grits when they gather for
their annual liberal barbecue in Toronto.
* Ed. Note: TAG "Tenant Action Group" is is antiauthoritarian anticapitalist
direct action social struggle initiative.

From their web page: http://www.ocap.ca/tag/ :

"We are a collective of working class people fighting the system in
Belleville for over two years. We have no funding. We do not charge
for our services.

TAG's demands are simple and reasonable: that governments build
affordable housing, bring back real rent controls and amend
residential tenancy laws to combat unfair evictions.

We take a solidly anti-capitalist stance that hopes to put the power
back into its working class members. TAG believes that you cannot
just talk homelessness away. We believe in the tried and true tactic
of "direct action". This means that unless governments provide for
the dignity of it citizens, then we are ready, willing and able to
confront the authorities in an effort to obtain justice.

Some of the things we've done:

-Welfare office occupations.
-Anti-"Safe Streets" Act squeegee action (made sixty bucks!)
-Hydro office occupations.
-Ontario Rental Housing casework.
-O-16 Toronto financial district disruption.
-IWW organizing/pickets
-Highway 401 blockade (G-8)
-Mission Press Squat, Seven Year Squat, Pope Squat (more to
-Quebec City, anti G-8, anti IMF, anti World Bank, Anti-Irag War,
No One Illegal...various anti-capitalist globalization protests.

TAG members are Caseworkers and Organizers: tenants, workers,
welfare recipients and Disability recipients standing up with those in
the same predicament. We don't believe in representation; we
believe in us standing up with you to enforce your right to live in

We stand with Common Front comrades in Toronto (OCAP),
Sudbury (SCAP), Kingston (OCF Kingston), Ottawa (OCF
Ottawa)), Montreal (CLAC), Peterborough (PCAP), Kitchener and
Waterloo (KYC), Vancouver (APC) and elsewhere.

TAG members have faced police beatings and arrests, tickets,
Tresspass To Property Act notices and much more. TAG members
have been fired from work for political activity. TAG's activities will
not cease until social justice is given its rightful priority."
