Social and political activist Heidi Rimke will be handed a verdict this
Friday, August 13th, in a trial revolving around her arrest for disrupting
an Ottawa city council meeting over the unjustifiable social emergency of
homelessness, poverty, and social housing.
During an Ottawa City Council meeting in July of 2002, Rimke, a CUPE 4600
sister, member of Ottawa's Anti-Capitalist Community Action (ACA) and a
sociologist who lectures at Carleton University and the University of
Ottawa, took the fight against poverty directly to the bastards
responsible. Calling Mayor Bob Chiarelli a liar and coward during a
Council meeting in July 2002, Heidi demanded his resignation for the utter
disregard shown by him for the most vulnerable members of the community.
As well, Heidi demanded Council create a "use-it-or-lose-it" by-law to
convert abandoned buildings into social housing, and immediately withdraw
the 122 criminal charges relating to the June 2002 Seven Year Squat at 246
Gilmour Street in Ottawa.

Arrested outside City Hall, Heidi is charged with criminal mischief under
$5000 and causing a disturbance. Rimke and her lawyer, Mark Ertel, have
argued that interrupting a city council meeting should not be a matter of
criminal law but rather the constitutional right to freedom of political
expression and speech. The agent of the state, Crown prosecutor,
Meaghan Cunningham, believes that criminal charges are appropriate because
city hall is "not an appropriate forum for this type of political speech."
If city hall isnít the place to voice your opinion on public policy, then
where is?

Over the course of her trial, Heidi has provided the court with statistics
on the high morbidity rates of the homeless population, who live, on
average, live half as long as the general population. She has testified
that approximately 1000 people go without shelter every night in the
Ottawa, and has made clear that social problems such as poverty and
homelessness are the direct result of governmental inaction and conscious
policy decisions.

This Friday, August 13th, Judge Inrig (who retires on August 25th) will
hand down his decision. Anti-capitalist Community Action asks all
individuals committed to social justice to join us at Tent City (Elgin @
Lisgar) at 1:30pm for a rally and short march to Courtroom #3.

Demand Justice for Heidi! Demand Action on Poverty Now!
