During the years of the Common Sense Revolution, a vast transfer of
wealth took place in Ontario. Billionaires got massive tax breaks and
unheard of profits while workers saw the rate of unionization cut by 19%,
and the poor were driven down to the lowest levels since the Great Depression.
Then along came Dalton McGuinty on a cynical and false promise of change.
As his regime logged up its first few months in Government, it became
crystal clear that the task of the Liberals was not to reverse the Tory
assault but to consolidate it. None of the lavish tax breaks to the rich
were taken back. No serious drive to create housing was set in motion.
The long frozen minimum wage was increased by just a few pennies for the
sake of appearances. The hundreds of thousands of people who had seen 40%
of the value of their social assistance cheques wiped out during the
Harris years have been offered a token 3% increase, which the privatized
computer system can’t even deliver to them.

McGuinty could not have made it clearer that he will not deliver on his
promises of change. In fact, if he is able to, he will not just
consolidate the Tory assault but will press forward with the attack.
Astoundingly, however, as record numbers face homelessness and poverty and
as working people continue to lose ground, there is almost nothing in the
way of a challenge to the Liberals.

There is a deep feeling of bitterness in the communities of Ontario over
the shameless falsehood of the Liberals. Now is the time to demand real
concessions from them. We want the Tory cuts to be restored. We want a
minimum wage that is a living wage and a 40% increase in welfare and
disability payments. We must begin the job of building a serious drive to
fight this duplicitous Government.

On August 28, a veritable ‘who’s who’ of the Provincial Liberal
establishment will gather in a north Toronto mansion for a fundraising
barbeque. It is the perfect moment to end the passivity of working class
and progressive movements that McGuinty has benefited from. This vile
exercise in self-congratulation takes place while homeless people sleep on
the streets and hundreds of thousands agonize over the choice between
feeding their kids and paying the rent. OCAP plans to be a very loud and
an extremely unwelcome guest on the 28th and we appeal to you to come out
and support us in this.

If you can help provide food on the day, could offer a ride up to the
event or could buy some ‘tickets’ for one of the buses we need to rent,
give OCAP a call at (416) 925-6939. Above all else, come out on the day.
Bring the banner of your union local or community organization. Let’s
show Dalton McGuinty that his decision to perpetuate of the Harris legacy
comes with a price and the first payment will be taken from him on August
