On Black August and the Chicano Moratorium 34th Anniversary, join
us for a Houston Communities of Color Consulta (A People's Assembly)
Date: Sunday, August 29, 2004 Location: TBA
The GOP is in NYC hosting its sitdown and, in Houston, so are we!
> Why now?
The Communities of Color Consulta comes at a major moment in
Houston and national politics, as well as our collective history.
On August 29, the Republican National Convention will
be hosted in New York City. Many people of color have
been angered by Republican positions in the state and
nation. Here in Texas, Republicans cut social
services, like the children’s health insurance
program, and argued for local police to start acting
as Border Patrol agents when dealing with immigrants.
Nationally, President Bush’s “War on Terror” has meant
layoffs and unemployment, while his corporate
executive buddies cash in on tax dollars.

In Houston, communities of color are facing many
issues. Gentrification is everywhere. Developers like
Bob Perry, recognized as the state’s biggest
Republican contributor, are buying up of people’s
homes to tear them down and build high-priced homes
the neighborhood can’t afford. Community people in
Third Ward (historically a community of people of
African descent) and Second Ward (historically Latino)
are stepping up to say they won’t sell. Many of our
youth in Houston are being recruited to go overseas
and fight a war that many Black and Brown people,
according to polls, never agreed with. Those doing
community efforts, such as the New Black Panthers'
Quanell X, are criminalized, as are many of our people
less active on the frontlines. Who prosecutes them?
Republican District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal.

Some say we need to go to New York to protest the
Republicans, but the real solution is to organize here
at home and build our own power. The Consulta is one
step.

Who's organizing it?

FUSE is a Houston, Texas-based Anarchist People of
Color grassroots collective uniting people of color to
fight for freedom, unity, self-determination and
empowerment.
