Today, Sunday 25th April [Italy's "Liberation Day" - tr.], "Resistenza
Antifascista", a network which includes various groups and individuals
involved in militant anti-fascism, held a demonstration at 9am with
leafleting until the start of the official commemoration ceremony. Many
people joined us as we demonstrated, people who share our anti-fascism,
bringing the numbers to around a hundred. At the end of the ceremony,
the square filled up with people and colour, a peaceful show of freedom
and justice. Books and magazines were distributed, there were stalls
with food and drink, a sound system for music and an open microphone
with no shortage of speakers. Most of the speeches centred on why it
was necessary to be there today with all the war, terrorism and the
ever-worsening living and working conditions we "enjoy" today. We also
emphasised our objections to the racist laws being introduced, which
are responsible for the building in this region of "temporary holding
centres" to lock up innocent migrants. Speakers also underlined the
importance of objecting to the scandalous, ignoble parade which has
been organized over the past few years by Alleanza Nazionale
["ex"-fascist party and member of the government coalition -tr.] and
Azione Giovane [their youth wing - tr.], who are nothing but fascists
in business suits who, with the help of their friends in government and
a police force only too willing to "escort" them at whatever cost,
march to the square to lay wreaths to "all the fallen".

Their demonstration means very little, but the message is clear: we are
in power, we need to wipe our slates clean so we can go one making the
same intolerant, racist laws as we did during the fascist period. And
in order to do this they have to "pacify" history, to re-write it so
that the struggle against nazism-fascism was just some civil war and
that after all we are all Italians so the butchers and their victims
are all worth the same.

All this is disgraceful. It is killing a second time those who gave
their lives to free themselves from the horrors and lies. But it's also
slowly killing day by day the collective memory which can only lie on
the side of right, on the side of history.

It is for this that we couldn't stand idly by over the years. Our
hearts and minds have driven us to stop this scandal, to shout "no
pasaran", to seek to "resist" (peacefully but tenaciously) the fascists
and their squads who are once again armed, and wearing the uniforms of
the police, the carabinieri and the guardie di finanza.

While the sun shone down on everyone, on the singing and the children
running around, a large banner was displayed reading "let them
globalize their domination - we will globalize our resistance". But
there was a black cloud on the horizon - not a rain cloud, but a mass
of police and carabinieri - dozen upon dozen of these forces of
(dis)order in riot gear began to arrive at Piazza Ellero around midday.

Those attending the demo gathered closer together, those who could
joining the passive "resistance". Children and older people withdrew to
the sides of the square. Then along came a small group of about 20
fascists escorted by large military troupe.

While 40 comrades sat down on the road arm-in-arm, readying themselves
to resist, they police charged.

The level of brutality and the violence of the police this year was
unlike any other year, mainly because there were so many more of them
this time round, but also maybe because that was simply what they had
been ordered to do. We were dragged around, pushed around, punched,
batoned, thrown to the ground and kicked. 15 people, male and female
were injured in various ways. Some had their wrists, fingers or arms
twisted, some were pushed face-down to the ground by up to 5 cops who
held our faces in the dust. The Guardie di Finanza were particularly

All this was done in clear view of everyone in the square and anyone
who sees the pictures. And what can be seen is that dozens of men and
women, proud anti-fascists, openly and peacefully demonstrated their
ideas only to be met with physical violence.

What is also clear is that for the umpteenth time, Pordenone was solid
and was able to "resist" once again, in even greater numbers than
before, against these innumerable provocations.

A hundred men and women got rid of the fascists for one morning, who
then passed by in a minute, disgracing the whole square.

And this was only another stage in the struggle - we will be there
again the next time because "we have a new world in our hearts", and it
is the same world as that of our fathers and our grandfathers, it is
the world we want for our children. No handful of pathetic fascists
protected by their parliamentarians and faithful police forces will
destroy it.
