On Monday 26 April, police attacked striking workers gathered outside
the Fiat plant in Melfi, southern Italy, in order to allow a busload of
scab workers pass through the factory gates. 12 workers received
treatment for the injuries they sustained at the hands of the police
repression of the most basic of workers' rights - the right to strike,
to peacefully demonstrate their refusal to continue working under the
absurd conditions they face. But the struggle of the workers, supported
by the FIOM union (affiliated to the CGIL) and SLAI-Cobas, does not end here.
The call for solidarity has been answered and FIOM has called a general
strike for the industrial workers sector for Wednesday. Fiat workers in
Pomigliano, Arese, Mirafiori will join the strike in solidarity with
their comrades in Melfi and the solidarity is spreading also to other
companies, with workers from the ILVA plant also planning a 4-hour
stoppage on Wednesday.

Lightning strikes involving thousands of workers were called yesterday
with workers calling stoppages in the provinces of Brescia and Bologna.
There were also solidarity strikes in Tuscany, Piedmont and Naples,
Cassino and Pomigliano d'Arco. Workers at the Alfa Romeo plant in Arese
and the Iveco plant in Milan also came out.

Today, Tuesday 27th April, over 2,000 workers showed their resistance
by turning out to block the gates of the Melfi factory and not one
person showed up for work, either for last night's shift or for this
morning's! There has also been solidarity from coach drivers who have
refused to ferry scabs (though none showed up today) to the factory.
