Earth (First!) Day happened in Modesto on April 17th, put on by the DAAA
Collective, and was a large success, and lasting from 10am-5pm. After
about 10 minutes from our arrival on the location of the park, we were
told by a security guard that we had to leave since we did not have a
permit to have a booth at the park. Several collective members stated
several times that we were not there to sell anything, and we pointed
out how it was hypocritical that corporations like Frito Lay, and Clear
Channel where in abundance at the park, but we were being asked to
leave. Luckily, one of the people working on the guerrilla theater
planned for the day was a member of the local Green Party, and since
their booth was only one small card table, we piggy backed on thier spot.

Our free literature table was full to capacity with everything from
books, zines, and journals ranging from SHAC, to IWW, to Green Anarchy.

We "came across" about 20 white shirts that day, and spray painted them
with various revolutionary/anti-Bush stencils, and by mid day all of
them were taken.

Food Not Bombs managed to dumpster up three large bags of donuts in
packaged boxes from the local Corporate Creme, and by about 1pm, all of
them had been taken.

We made a mid day meal of stir fry rice, tofu, and veggies, and we got
rid of almost all of it. Many people took flyers on what we were doing
as a collective, and wanted to start coming out to various events like
either Critical Mass, or Food Not Bombs.

We also constructed a large fake "Hummer", complete with a dry ice smog
pipe. With the help of three gas masked anarchists trailing behind
giving out flyers, alot of people stopped to look at the large car box,
and received a flyer entitled, "Is Car Culture Making You Sick?", (going
over various issues such as pollution, urban sprawl, market control),
and a flyer for the upcoming Critical Mass bike ride, and other event.
The flyer also featured links to groups like Earth First!, and other
radical environmental organizations.

All in all, with the help of about 10 DAAAistas/FNBers, and the efficent
reporting of Central Valley Indymedia, the day was a success, and we all
felt that we got across to alot of new people that would probably never
be exposed to anarchist stream of thought and literature.
