X: The congress of the international of anarchist federations took
place over the Easter weekend in France. About 150 people
attended, delegates and observers, from France (FA), Italy (FAIt),
Germany (?), Britain/Ireland (AF, Freedom), Czechia/Slovakia
(CSAF), Spain/Portugal (FAI - yes the FAI), Venezuela (CRA),
Argentina (FLA), Belarus (FAB), Russia (ADA) and others.
The trip was really good. I was impressed, it was much better than
I had expected. Everyone was really friendly, the meetings were
good despite initial attempts to veto everything by the FAI, who
calmed down after a bit. We managed to cooperate and develop
some strategies together despite being quite differing groups and
speaking many laguages, which means that hopefully soon the
IFA will stop just being a paper international and actually get
some stuff done in the real world.

To the anti-organisationalists and primitivists who think that
meetings like this are automatically bureaucratic and hierarchical,
well it was one of the more democratic and empowering meetings
I've been to. I couldn't see any hierarchy at all and although there
was some bureaucratic behaviour it didn't impede us too much.

The main problem is that it is a mainly European international,
not having many member groups outside Europe, none in Africa
and only one in Asia (South Korea, who didn't attend).
Did AF suggest they wanted to take over the secretarship with the
Czech group? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick...?
The secretariat is a rotating position, and the holding federation
changes at each conference. The Italians were the last secretariat,
and they passed iton this conference. As the rotation has to avoid
any federation getting it too many times (thereby avoiding the
formation of beurocratic hierarchy), the UK federation was
proposed and accepted.
