mission statement - Brief History and Goals
As the United States Government began to respond to the attacks of September 11th, so
did over 150 NYU students, faculty, staff, and community members. Our Response? PEACE.
On the morning of September 11th, many of us watched the World Trade Center fall. We
were there to see the planes hit the towers, to see human beings jump to escape the
flames, to watch the towers fall, to run, covered in soot for safety, to witness,
first-hand, the courageous efforts of our city's rescue workers, to worry about our
loved ones, to turn out city into a community of love, grief, and compassion.
For weeks after September 11th, many of us were evacuated from our homes in Lower Manhattan.
We walked around New York in a daze, how could this happen? How could this happen here?

Why? With feelings of helplessness and confusion we watched
widespread racism as people throughout our country attacked
fellow Americans for the color of their skin and style of dress. We
watched our media and our government claim that the only way
our country could respond to the atrocious acts of violence on
September 11th was with more violence. More innocent human
beings would be killed.
Less than two weeks after September 11th, we realized we could
watch no more; It was time to ACT! We came together in support
of the following points of unity:

* Oppose this war and promote non-violent resolution to world
conflict.
* Reject racist and ideological scapegoating.
* Defend our civil liberties as well as protect and further the
basic rights and freedoms of all peoples
* Stand against the system of social and economic injustice that
breeds acts of hatred.
* Work towards an understanding of the interdependency of our
global community and the impact of our actions on each other.

United by these principles, our mission was, and is, to educate our
community and our county about why violence and racism are not
the answers to September 11th or terrorism. To do this, we've
particpipated in vigils and marches, held speak-outs, teach-ins
and rallies, ran postering campaigns, but most importantly we've
spoken to hundreds of people like people, dialoguing with them
about September 11th and its aftermath.

As the U.S. continues to drop bombs on Afghanistan and attack
domestic civil liberties, we continue to speak up against these
actions. Although we are only one community on one campus in
one city in the country, we are part of a large and growing
National Youth and Student Peace Movement. Together, in
solidarity around the country, our voices will be heard.

The Peace Coalition has a working group model where people get together
in smaller groups and work on issues that reflect the five points of unity.
Anyone can start a working group of their own and/or be involved in as many
groups as they'd like. The following is a list of current working groups:

# Anti-Globalization Working Group
# Education Working Group
==================================
* The "NYU Peace Coalition" is an anti-authoritarian, non-hierarchical,
anti-racist, non-heteronormative, and anti-patriarchal social justice
activist group. Through Peace Coalition, students work to make the
connections between global corporate capital and the increasing
militarism that we have seen since the rise of neoliberalism and in the
wake of the 9-11 tragedy. We seek to promote social equality, justice
and peace from the bottom up and fight to oppose the increasing threat
of empire".
