This talk will explore the history and possible future of black
anarchism. It will cover anarchistic elements in African traditions,
anti-authoritarian moments in America’s black liberation movement, and
the possible contours of a black anarchism for the new millennium.
Ashanti Alston is a former member of the Black Panther Party and former
prisoner-of-war (Black Liberation Army). He is presently a member of
Estación Libre/People of Color Zapatista Support Group, a board member
of the Institute for Anarchist Studies, and the Northeast U.S.
Coordinator for Critical Resistance.

The Institute for Anarchist Studies is a nonprofit foundation
established in 1996 to support the development of anarchism. We are
primarily a grant-giving organization for radical writers: we have
funded over thirty projects by authors from countries such as
Argentina, Canada, Chile, Ireland, Mexico, Nigeria, Germany, South
Africa, and the United States.
