BOOK LAUNCH IN PORTO ALEGRE
"Acción Directa Anarquista - Una Historia de FAU" ["Anarchist Direct Action - A History of the FAU]
On 14th September we had the pleasure of receiving once again
here at the FAG our comrades Juan Carlos Mechoso and his
companion Marina, who are always lesson in life and a greater
incentive for our militants. We launched the book written by
Juan Carlos Mechoso, which tells the history of the Uruguayan
Anarchist Federation in the years from 1965 to 1973. In the
period in subject, Uruguay, as well as other countries of the
continent, went through a period of popular struggle matched
with the dreams for a radical transformation of society,
while the dictatorships tried to crush the people who were
rising up. The FAU has remained up to the present day
coherent with its libertarian beginnings, with its
revolutionary intent and with the peculiarities of the
current historical moment.

POLITICAL FORMATION - CONJUNCTURE

On last Sunday of the month, FAG militants gather to explore
discussion on the Conjuncture, the Brazilian and
Latin-American situation. The discussions are open to
sympathisers, and have been going on since August. Often our
grassroots work suffocates us and we forget about political
discussion, and these educational sessions have served to
alert us of this need and to improve our level of analysis.

TRIP TO ARGENTINA

In September, a comrade from the FAG travelled to Argentina
with the aim of getting to know better those anarchist
organizations with whom we have been linked without ever
being closely acquainted: OSL and AUCA. OSL acts in 4 bases
of the Argentinian MTD, (one of the social movements of the
unemployed there). They told us that the internal level of
organization is a little low as far as anarchism is
concerned. They publish the newspaper En La Calle and support
some movements on the question of human rights.

FAG relations are much closer and fluid with AUCA, an
anarchist political organization which was present at the
Jornadas Anarquistas at the beginning of 2003, and we noticed
a great similarity of purpose and methods. They work in the
MUP (Movimiento de Unidad Popular), which is influenced by
them and today gathers more than 1,500 people and is well
respected. They organize cooperatives of unemployed people,
which exist in several cities in Argentina, active in the
urban outskirts. They use methods of direct action such as
the closing of streets and occupations in order to obtain
budgets and basic goods. AUCA have a section in the centre of
La Plata, an occupied house that is shared with the MUP and
Água Negra, a student tendency they are active in. The FAG
was invited to speak to about 50 sympathisers regarding our
work and the current Brazilian situation. We consider this
organization a sister organization.
