Anarchist Events On Saturday May 3rd, the New Brunswick, NJ
community celebrated May Day with a picnic in Feaster Park,
followed by a small, but spirited, march through the city in
commemoration and celebration of International Worker's Day.
Sponsored by the New Brunswick Anarchist Union (NBAU), the
picnic brought together about 60 people. It was a diverse crowd,
with local activists mingling with community members, and our out
of town friends getting to see first hand what New Brunswick is
really like. It was a great opportunity for people to get to know each
other and learn from one another. Several groups, including the
Industrial Workers of the World, Anti-Racist Action, and NBAU
shared literature for any one who was interested in learning more or
getting involved in local issues.

As with any celebration on a warm spring day, many people took
the opportunity to just relax and have a good time. People were
playing Frisbee, soccer, and kickball, as well as just hanging out and
making new friends.

After the picnic was over, 25 people took to the streets to spread
the message of May Day. Focusing on mostly local issues,
marchers took aim at both Mayor Cahill and the New Brunswick
Development Corporation. Alternating between "DEVCO OUT!
DEVCO OUT! THIS IS OUR COMMUNITY!," and "CAHILL OUT!
CAHILL OUT! THIS IS OUR COMMUNITY!" marchers voiced their
fustration with two influential power players in the city who have
been instrumental in attempting to gentrify the city, by displacing
the long-time working class residents and replacing them with
executives from the local research hospitals and Johnson and
Johnson, whose world headquarters is in New Brunswick.

While passing out literature about the history of May Day and other
relevant topics, the march was greeted with shouts of "Happy May
Day" and raised fists from the many people we passed.

All in all, while the event was smaller than hoped for, it was a
definite success, with many people already discussing an annual
May Day celebration in New Brunswick.
