First of all, apologies if you get this e-mail more than once. We're
covering several lists to make sure the information gets spread widely.
On Saturday afternoon, 5/3, WSA folks in NYC took part in a great picket at
the Citarella gourmet food store on 6th Ave. & 9th St. organized by Workers
in Action committee of Make The Road By Walking. The picket was in support
of 3 workers fired by Citarella for protesting supervisory abuse, and
against Citarella's attempt to silence protest by using bogus libel lawsuit
(since thrown out of court). There were over 50 people there with some loud
percussion and energetic Spanish and English chants (not to mention a great
big paper mache fish made by Make The Road and WSA member Bert). There was
some media coverage and several local pols showed up.

That evening WSA and Make The Road cosponsored a party in honor of May Day
at Umbrella House, a successful squat and community center on the Lower East
Side. It rocked! Over 90 people attended by my count, and DJ Sergio
Vega and the bands Hooverville and Spunk Lads shook the house. We raised
$600 net to send to the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to benfit the Taco
Bell struggle, and some proceeds went to Umbrella House as well to help with
their activities. The crowd was very easy to deal with and a good time
seemed to be had by all.

We look forward to more of these kind of activities in the near future.

Solidarity,
Steve Rabinowitz
