The university students began the protests yesterday. The students cut
highways in Barcelona and Madrid, then they protested in the centre of
the city. There were more protests in other cities. In Madrid, the police
used rubber bullets against the students (not usual in the last few years
in Spain). In the evening, at 8.00 we occupied Plaza de Sol in Madrid.
Between 9,000 (police estimates) and 500,000 (callers) demonstrators. The
Plaza holds 40,000 and was clearly full.
At 9.00 a group of people spontaneously started moving towards the
Congress. Only CNT, CGT, Solidaridad Obrera, anarchist and home-made
flags. The initial group was 1000-2000 people. The police retreated
positions on three occasions (not that we were specially violent, they
were caught by surprise and were outnumbered) and finally the group
reached the Congress, a place where it is "prohibited" to demonstrate. We
then stopped traffic in Cibeles, a nearby traffic junction. More people
left Sol and came to join us in front of the Congress and in Cibeles.
Again, only red-and-black and black flags. Next stop was the headquarters
of the Partido Popular, the party in government. Now the police were more
belligerent and shot warning shots in the air. We then decided to move on
to the American embassy and that is when the police charged en masse and
the crowd broke up.
Interesting that the police allow us to demonstrate in front of the
Congress, which has always been impossible, don't allow demonstrations in
front of the Partido Popular (before possible), and attack us when we
want to demonstrate in front of the American embassy (before possible).
Their priorities are clear.
This evening there is a call to demonstrate in front of the American
embassy.
