today, saturday, june 14, assorted anarchists squatted the
theological department of the university in thessaloniki, Greece.
the university is an autonomous space, when the police want to
enter the grounds they must gain permission from the
headmaster of the school. if the headmaster where to do this, as
happened last ten years ago, he/she basically signs their own
resignation papers because of student protest.

today we set up different commitees, one for a bar, another for
food, and another for general space management. the situation
here is unlike anywhere i have been before. there are six
umbrella groups: anti-authoritarian movement; anti-capitalist
anti-imperialists, marxist lenninists, trotskists, socail forum
(attac types), and the communist party (who act like stalinists).
all these groups except fot the communist party are going to
participae in the university occupation. the anarchists have
started early though, most groups join in on tuesday.

now there are a couple hundred people milling around. greeks,
americans, germans, english, swedes, austrians, french, and
others of course. i have heard that turkish anarchists are being
denied visas which makes crossing the border a virtual
impossibility.
there seems to be a bit of a tactical split amoung the anarchists.
one group, (anti-authoritarian movement saloniki 2003) are
planning on taking busses (one hour ride) to the red zone (on
june 20) (where the eu meeting is taking place) and attacking it.
the citizenry there has invited the movement and are themselves
pissed about being in a militarized zone. the style of these
anarchist is helemts and sticks, hand to hand combat. other
anarchists (this is only the critique i have heard from saloniki
2003 people, i have not talked to them myself) want to stay in
thesaloniki and burn things. the critique is that they are not so
selective with their targets. here throwing a molotov and running
away is considered whimpy. the people i have talked see this
only as a defensive and or retaliatory tactic.

in general politics is quite violent here. even the police riot with
each other (when some of them where on strike). the communist
party has more money than the five other umbrella groups
combined. their banners and posters are everywhere. there have
been some fights when they have been taking down anarchist
posters. on the second day of the summit (saturday 21) the
communist plan to build a human shield around the city and
threaten bloodshed for anyone trying to cross. they have been
working with the police, are interested in proped media
confrontaions, have been saying anarchist are infiltrators, etc.
very stalinist types, all to reminiscent of barcelona 1937-8.

in general the mood is good. im tired but have managed some
stimulating conversations and its nice to see some comrades
from the states. people here are expecting between 3-5000
anarchists. maybe 40,000 communists i heard somewhere. total
around 100,000 demonstrators.

i suggest anarchists around the world get ready for solidarity
actions. police repression on high is likely. anyway who doesnt
want to march, dance, talk, fight, etc. in june. its nice. a bit too
hot here almost.
