This will be the last logistical and organizing update sent by e-mail.
To receive updated information about the actions against the WTO in
Montreal, you can join the wto-montreal-announce e-mail list. To
subscribe, visit the following page:
To stay up-to-date, consult our website: http://montreal.resist.ca. The
website also includes the original callout, and anti-WTO analysis.

[This update includes the following info: 1) When you arrive in Montreal;
2) If you live in Montreal; 3) Housing; 4) Buses; 5) Food; 6) Donations;
7) Spokescouncils; 8) Calendar of Events; 9) Action Plans; 10) Affinity
Groups; 11) Basis of Unity.]

There will NOT be one centralized convergence space in Montreal for the
anti-WTO actions. Rather, there will be several organizing spaces where
you can plug in:

---> Please consult the Calendar of Events at
http://montreal.resist.ca/schedule.shtml for WTO-related events in
Montreal between NOW AND JULY 30. Attending the various events, especially
the organizing assembly (July 23), the banner-making session (July 24),
the Direct Action training (July 25) or the Teach-in (July 26) are the
best ways to plug into local activities in Montreal before July 26. The
different events take place at different locations.

---> If you arrive BEFORE JULY 27 you can also pick-up basic organizing
information (map and calendar) at the following two locations: 1) The
Alternative Bookshop, 2035 St-Laurent Boulevard, metro St-Laurent; usually
open from noon-6pm (until 9pm on Fridays); or 2) QPIRG-Concordia, 1420
Sherbrooke Street West, 4th floor, metro Guy-Concordia; usually open from
11am-5pm (closed on Fridays). NOTE: These spaces are only intended to be
venues to pick up basic demo information that will be on tables at the
entrance, as well as to leave messages on a message board. They are NOT
convergence spaces.

---> There will an Indymedia Center open from July 27 at 4pm onwards. The
IMC space will be located at 3647 University Avenue (south of Pine, north
of Sherbrooke, metro McGill).

---> If you arrive ON OR AFTER JULY 27, it's best to plug in at the
spokescouncils, which will be held from July 27-30 at 6:30pm.
Spokescouncil info is included below. You can also plug in at the Green
Zone, which will be between July 28-30, between 10am-5pm (approximately).
The Green Zone will be announced shortly.

---> If you arriving on a bus, make sure your bus contact gets in touch
with advance. Local organizers will advise buses about where to arrive.

We need your help! Check out the Calendar of Events at
http://montreal.resist.ca/schedule.shtml for ways you can help. In
particular, you can get involved as follows:

---> Mobilizing: Spread the word about the July 26 Teach-in ("Words are
Weapons"), the July 27 child-friendly march ("No One Is Illegal") and the
July 28-30 Days of Action ("WTO's in Town? Shut it Down!"). Encourage your
friends and family to attend the various events. Word-of-mouth publicity
is important.

---> Postering and flyering: If you can help put up posters or flyer,
don't hesitate to get in touch at resisteomc@resist.ca.

---> Adopt-an-activist!: Do you have extra space in your apartment or
home? Some floor space? If so, consider adopting-an-activist to help house
the hundreds of out-of-town protesters who will be converging on Montreal.
Just e-mail us at resisteomc@resist.ca for an Adopt-an-activist form.

---> Get involved in a committee: Even at the last minute, we could use
your help as part of a legal observer team, or a trained medic (trainings
to be offered on July 25) or a video camera observer, or just as a
sympathetic participant at the actions and demos. Don't be shy about
getting involved. Just e-mail resisteomc@resist.ca letting us know how you
want to get involved.

---> Self-organize: You can organize in solidarity with the demonstrations
without attending one meeting. Make some placards or banners; write
letters or articles for local media supporting the demonstrations, or
criticizing the WTO; organize with some friends to attend the demos with
your specific anti-WTO message; get involved with independent media with
your notebook, video camera and tape recorder; and more!

We are currently attempting to secure hundreds of housing spaces for all
the out-of-towners that we expect. We strongly encourage you to pack a
sleeping bag. If you need housing between July 26-30, please submit the
housing form at the end of this e-mail to both resisteomc@resist.ca and
resisteomc@yahoo.ca. Please submit your housing requests before July 24,
otherwise, you will need to visit the housing table that will be set-up at
the July 27 and July 28 spokescouncils (see Spokescouncil info below).

If you live in the Montreal-area and can offer housing, please e-mail us
at resisteomc@resist.ca.

There are buses that are being organized to travel to Montreal from
Sudbury, Oakville-Burlington, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City, the Beauce and
the Maritimes. More info is available on our website. There are also rides
being organized from Ohio, Michigan, New York, DC, Vermont, Massachusetts
as well as all over Ontario and Quebec. We strongly encourage bus
organizers to get in touch with us IN ADVANCE. If you have rides to offer,
please contact us too at resisteomc@resist.ca.

There is a food committee that is active locally in gathering and
preparing food. We are not guaranteeing three free meals a day, but there
will be simple meals (by donation) available at most demo and
spokescouncil spaces.

All anti-WTO events and logistics are being organized through donations.
If you or your organization can help with a donation (anywhere from $5 to
$1000), please let us know by e-mail at resisteomc@resist.ca. Any amount

There will be spokescouncils (planning assemblies and meetings) every
evening at 6:30pm (sharp) between July 27-30. The spokescouncils will take
place at the following venues:

---> Sunday, July, 27, 6:30pm (sharp!): L'X, 182 Ste-Catherine East
(between metros Berri-UQAM and St-Laurent)

---> Monday, July 28, 6:30pm: UQAM, Pavillon Hubert Aquin, room AM-050,
corner of Ste-Catherine and St-Denis (metro Berri-UQAM)

---> Tuesday, July 29, 6:30pm: UQAM, Pavillon Hubert Aquin, room AM-050,
corner of Ste-Catherine and St-Denis (metro Berri-UQAM)

---> Wednesday, July, 30, 6:30pm: L’X, 182 Ste-Catherine East (between
metros Berri-UQAM and St-Laurent)

Please note that while everyone can participate in the spokescouncils,
only delegates from affinity groups will be eligible to vote. The voting
method will be similar to prior consultas and spokescouncils in Montreal
(initial indicative votes striving for consensus; if no consensus, final
votes where at least 75% of delegates must vote yes, not including
abstentions). The spokescouncils will be bilingual (French and English).
An affinity group is any group of 3 or more people who are organizing
together for the actions and who are in agreement with the basis of unity
of the protests (the Peoples' Global Action Hallmarks, included below).

A full calendar of events, including the five days of action (July 26-30)
is available on the website at http://montreal.resist.ca/schedule.shtml.
The main events, in brief, are as follows:

---> Saturday, July 26, 9:30am-5:30pm: TEACH-IN: WORDS ARE WEAPONS
UQAM, Pavillon Hubert Aquin (Ste-Catherine and St-Denis, metro
Berri-UQAM). Several workshops and presentations on a variety of topics.
Detailed schedule at: http://montreal.resist.ca/teach-in.shtml

---> Sunday, July 27, 1pm: NO ONE IS ILLEGAL: A celebration of resistance
in the streets of Montreal! A child-friendly march and demonstation with
speakers, music and poetry. Gathering Point: Guy and deMaisonneuve (metro
Guy-Concordia). Bring your banners and symbols of resistance.

---> Monday, July 28, 6:30am (sharp!): DAY OF ACTION: Disrupt the WTO
Mini-Ministerial. Two snake marches departing from separate locations and
converging at the site of the WTO Mini-Ministerial meeting (the Sheraton
Hotel, on Rene-Levesque Boulevard West, between Drummond and Stanley).
Departure at 6:30 am (sharp!). The two meeting points are: 1) Phillips
Square (corner of Ste-Catherine and Union, metro McGill); and 2)
Guy-Concordia Square (opposite metro Guy-Concordia, Guy Street exit).
There will be a guerilla Street Party somewhere in downtown Montreal after
the Monday spokescouncil!

---> Tuesday, July 29, 10am: DEMONSTRATION to disrupt the WTO
Mini-Ministerial. Meet at Phillips Square (corner of Ste-Catherine and
Union, metro McGill).

---> Wednesday, July 30, 10am-5pm (approximately): ANTI-CAPITALIST
CARNIVAL. Location to be confirmed. To take place in the Green Zone. The
Green Zone is a safe, chill location for workshops and discussions. It
will also be in effect on Monday and Tuesday, between approximately
10am-5pm (location to be confirmed).

For full info about the above events, please consult the webpage at

The final action plan will be discussed at the spokescouncil on Sunday,
July 27. The recent location change of the WTO mini-ministerial (from the
Queen Elizabeth Hotel to the Sheraton Hotel) does not affect the original
action plan, since the two hotels are just blocks apart.

The Montreal Mobilization Against the WTO strongly encourages affinity
groups operating within the framework of the PGA hallmarks (our basis of
unity) to organize autonomous actions to shut down or disrupt the WTO
meetings in Montreal. The WTO Mini-Ministerial takes place at the Sheraton
Centre (1201 Rene-Levesque Boulevard West) between July 28-30). If you
want to plug into the local action scenario, contact us at

PGA Hallmarks (http://www.agp.org)

The following hallmarks are the basis of unity of the Popular Mobilization
Against the WTO in Montreal, within the framework of a respect for a
diversity of tactics, ranging from popular education to direct action.

1. A very clear rejection of capitalism, imperialism and feudalism; all
trade agreements, institutions and governments that promote destructive

2. We reject all forms and systems of domination and discrimination
including, but not limited to, patriarchy, racism and religious
fundamentalism of all creeds. We embrace the full dignity of all human

3. A confrontational attitude, since we do not think that lobbying can
have a major impact in such biased and undemocratic organizations, in
which transnational capital is the only real policy-maker;

4. A call to direct action and civil disobedience, support for social
movements' struggles, advocating forms of resistance which maximize
respect for life and oppressed peoples' rights, as well as the
construction of local alternatives to global capitalism;

5. An organizational philosophy based on decentralization and autonomy.

you send housing requests by e-mail.
