At the National Conference on Organized Resistance January 24-26 in
Washington DC, Hermann Maiba organized a workshop on PGA. He gave an
excellent short presentation on what PGA is and how it functions, and we
then had a discussion mostly centered on why it has been so difficult to get
PGA going in North America. We discussed the impact of September 11, the
difference in organizing cultures, how in the U.S. especially it is
difficult to form ongoing organizations and therefore itıs harder for people
to understand the value of a network of organizations, how we tend to be
focused on resisting the latest atrocity or madly trying to stop the most
blatant instance of violence perpetuated by our government, and have more
limited time and resources to devote to longer-term structures.
In the end, however, we came up with three constructive solutions:
--We need to form local collectives first, and build some real bases of
support in our own communities, before we think about another national
conference. (Apparently money is still owed from the last one.)
--We should hold PGA meetings, even informal ones such as this, in
conjunction with other meetings and mobilizations, to save on resources and
to start spreading awareness around PGA.
--We suggested holding a PGA future strategy summit in conjunction with the
North American Social Forum which will be held in Vancouver in August.

I promised to write up these notes and send them to the PGA list, which we
also encouraged participants to join.
Thanks, Hermann, for making this happen, Starhawk
