(train-hoppers, crusty kids, teenage runaways, travelers,
etc.) get access to social services in New York City. We are social
workers, consumers and anarchist activists committed to free-lance and
free of charge social work for the traveling folks that arrive in our city
every year.We hope to create a genuinely revolutionary model of social
work founded on the principles of respect, self-determination, autonomy,
liberation, solidarity and mutual aid. We reject discrimination, sexism,
racism, authoritarianism and capitalism, as well as the paternalism and
the dysfunctional power dynamics involved in most forms of social work.

We want to do our work in the spirit of mutual aid, and for that purpose
we have concrete information about radical projects and collectives, in
which traveling folks can get involved. We believe travelers can be a
valuable resource to the anarchist/activist community here in our city and
the help we offer them today will come full circle back to our community.
Some of the services we hope to help you get access to:

* Medical Care: free HIV testing; information on nutrition and
preventive healthcare; and direct medical care services.
* Legal Support: NYPD often harasses travelers, targeting people
because of the way they look and their nomadic lifestyle. We have
information about the law, your rights, the way the system works in
NYC, and possibly free legal advice.
* Food: We have a comprehensive listing of free food ranging from
soup kitchens to dumpster maps.
* Entitlements and Other Social Services: Some travelers are entitled
to social services. We can with free social work case management for
those interested in accessing services they qualify for.
* Harm Reduction: If you feel caught in the destructive cycle of
substance abuse, the moralizing and bureaucracy of most treatment
programs can be a huge turn off. Our network is working with progressive
programs that offer an alternative to both the lifestyle of substance
abuse and the dysfunctional moralizing of most substance abuse
programs.
* Mental Health: We have great resources for those who may be
suffering from mental illness and wish to seek aid.
* Veterinerian Services: For traveling people have companion animals
that they care for, we have found a range of options for accessing basic
services like vaccinations and proper documentation for animals. Also
basic information on animal care, taking in accounts their unique lifestyle.
* Political and Social Activities: The network keeps an up-to-date list
of free social events that people can attend to make connections,
socialize and share their experiences. In addition, we have information
about current or on-going radical political projects that individuals can
volunteer their skills, passions and labor to promote. We also have
information about the historic and current political struggles going on in
this city.
*
Miscellaneous: We try to help with a variety of other things that may
be useful for traveling people like: mail service, free showers, public
transportation information, lists of public bathrooms, hot-line numbers, a
safe way to contact family and friends, access to internet, etc.

We seek to create a partnership based on trust, understanding and
mutual aid between the travelling urban nomad community and the
activist community in NYC.
