In our previous edition we published the enitre letter of Subcomandante Marcos
to the Basque organization ETA, in which he clearly discussed the power issue.
We can use this outstanding text to present a few shorts comments about what
happened in Venezuela on the 11th of April 2002.

Marcos mentioned in a passage the struggle to impose, violently, an unidirectional
version of things "(...)And, sooner or later, dedicates its effort not so that its
truth is able to be born, to grow, to bring results and to die (because nothing of
this world is absolute and eternal), instead it kills all those that do not attack this
truth". A year ago we witnessed the mediatic building of an artificial polarisation,
since both camps represent the same type of domination, one focusing on the State and
the other one on the Market. In no other aspect were both extremes more alike as in the
manipulation of the information. Each sector of power controlled several
communications channels, this allowed them to manipulate and twist the content
at will. This is how a government that prided its origins of coup d'état became
itself a victim of a putsh, the latter being fueled with a growing popular movement of
discontent against the regime. Each pole frustrated, with their medias, the creation of an
impartial commission of investigation that would shed some light on the victims of that
day and on those of the following mobilisations.

"The word - says Marcos -, together with love and dignity is what makes us human
beings (...) words do not kill, but it is possible to kill the words and, with them, the
human bieng". From Globovision, Channel 8 - the State-owned television -, El Nacional or
many of the so called "communitarian medium" understand that the word is a "weapon" and
as such, it must be used against the enemy. Victims do not matter
(credibility itself for instance), they think that the ends justify the means.
One of them, constantly used by both camps, is lying. Also half truths.

"Anyone who just talks and does not listen, ends up thinking that what s/he says
is the only thing that counts". Us, the libertarians (1), struggle non stop against
those authoritarian communication methods because we want a better society. We try to
propagate ideas, arguments and proposals without giving up the critical spirit. This
publication plans to have a long road ahead itself to continue without ending
this Quixote like task. During the days that separate each issue, we send smoke
signals with our website www.nodo50.org/ellibertario.

(1) "Libertarian" in Spanish does not mean the same thing as it does in English.
In North America, so called anarchocapitalists began calling themselves
"libertarians" and the term is today barely used for anarchists. It lost its
original meaning. In Spanish, however, the term "libertarian" continues to mean
the same thing as anarchist.
