Squatter's "home" and property stolen last night Thursday, July 31, 2003
Peterborough, ON -- At around 9pm last night, a small one-room
wooden building which was being used as shelter by two
squatters, was forcibly removed from its location on the bank of
the Otonabee River near the London Street footbridge.
This building - known by some as the "mad house" after it was
parked on the front lawn of city hall for three days last June to
protest the lack of affordable housing in the City- was providing
shelter for two squatters who were previously evicted by the City
from 1130 Water Street.

Members of the Peterborough Coalition
Against Poverty had built the shelter last summer as an
emergency response to the housing crisis in Peterborough.

The current location of the shelter and those responsibile for
removing it is currently unkown, though some speculate that the
City or the Peterborough Utililities Services (who owns the land
along the river) are responsible for removing the shelter.

The squatters, who were not in the building at the time it was
removed - have not yet determined where they will find another
location for shelter.

Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of the
"mad house" or the location of the squatter's property which was
inside the house at the time of removal, is asked to contact the
Peterborough Coalition Against Poverty at (705) 749- 9694 or
