Militant anti-fascism (the kind that says we should sort out
fascists ourselves, rather than appealing to the state to do it) isn't
exclusive to anarchism. Nor does it say attacking fascists is the
only strategy. It's always pushed for a combination of political
and physical responses, working together.
Using the time-honoured tactic of getting your retaliation in first
can make the fascists stop and think. It also allows space to put
a political argument - that social problems can be solved by
redistributing power and resources, that more state power,
racism and regulation (which is what all the scum, from New
Labour and the Daily Mail to the British National Party, are
calling for) will only mean more shit for us at the bottom.
We should say to racists: if you demand that the state tag
'asylum-seekers', what will you do when they decide you're part
of a 'problem group' yourselves, maybe because you've just lost
your job?
To dismiss militant anti-fascism as 'coercive' really misses the
point. If we know the state only uses its power to its own
advantage, and we don't trust the fascists to do any different,
then who'll watch our backs if we don't do it ourselves?
