At noon on Tuesday, November 26, twenty members of the Ontario Coalition
Against Poverty visited the office of the Attorney General demanding
access to the ?Pope Squat? at 1510 King St. West and the removal of armed
guards who pointed pistols at former occupants.
The letter OCAP hand-delivered to the Attorney General?s office follows.

The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee
Delivered by hand
Re: 1510 King St. West
It has come to our attention that the office of the Public Guardian and
Trustee has now claimed ownership of the site at 1510 King St. West.
We therefore assume that it is the Province that now holds the contract
with the private security company stationed at the building on a 24 hour
basis.
While we find that the expense of a security contract to ensure an
abandoned building remain empty despicable in the extreme, the activities
of the security company itself sorely need attention.
OCAP has now received two independent, corroborating accounts of DC
security employees drawing and pointing firearms at residents of the Pope
Squat inside the building after giving them leave to enter for the
purposes of reclaiming belongings.
In addition, I am aware that a number of union officials representing the
Canadian Labour Congress, the Canadian Auto Workers and Building Trades
among others, have sent correspondence to the Attorney General requesting
both access to the site for the purpose of renovations, as well as a
meeting with high ranking officials as an active demonstration of
political will to see 1510 King St. West transformed into social housing.
So long as the various levels of Government impede the development of
social housing at 1510 King St. West, our Coalition is committed to action
that is swift, decisive and public in nature to serve as impetus for
movement when compassion and decency clearly will not.
Yours truly,
Sue Collis, organizer
Ontario Coalition Against Poverty
