We converged at Freedom corner as planned under the Green Belt movement sign.
We brought with us two banners, one which said 'our world is not for sale'
and another which said 'say no to IMF, WB, WTO'. We also carried a black flag
and some placards. We did some sidewalk art and handed out pamphlets and
talked to people to enlighten them about the various issues. At one point,
some cops did come up to see what we were up to but they left without asking
any questions. Despite all the fliers we sent out to various organizations
and groups around Nairobi, we were the only group there. Nevertheless, we
went on with what we had come to do. We marched along Uhuru highway and
stopped at the Upperhill roundabout where we were joined by some street
children and some onlookers who were curious to know more about
globalization. We then marched up the hill to the World Bank HQs but as soon
as we got there, the security guards confronted us and told us in a very
impolite way to leave, even though we were not on the property. I tried to
climb onto the sign with the flag but they stopped me before I could. We
stayed for a while so that people driving by could see what was happening and
many people did slow down to read our banners and some even honked their
horns in approval. We then moved on to the British High Commission where we
did some anti-war chants but we were soon chased away. We then completed the
march back at Freedom Corner. We think that if we had organized further ahead
of time, we may have had more people show up and maybe would have had more of
an impact. We are only a few months old so we are still working out
organizational problems and networking with other groups. In the future, we
are hoping to work with one of the human rights goups to organize another
Anti-globalization demo. Another problem that we realized was that the public
doesn't really realize just how bad the globalization issues are. We are
working out ways to educate them though and we are planning to start in the
very near future. anyway, we wanted to thank everyone who emailed us to show
their support. Thanks a lot everyone.
