For those of you not from the Sudbury area, the Marketeer's worked for a
call center here and last week were told that they would be layed off for
awhile but would receive their last pay cheque. Well the pay cheques must
be in the mail because they never got them. Mine Mill Local 598/CAW gave
them office space along with computer, photocopy, fax and their own email
address, to help them try and get orgainized as some of them are close to
being evicted from their homes. The following is what has happened so far.
Dear OCF-S/S-CAP supporters:
This evening a number of Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty members (about
6 of us) provided support for a group of the former workers from
Marketeer's. Rick Grylls from Mine Mill was also there for the first
part of the evening providing support. A meeting was held with a city
official, a more official meeting was promised for 10am tomorrow to deal
with social assistance questions, a number of media interviews were done
and at the end of the City Council meeting one of the former Marketeers
disrupted the meeting with the support of the other workers and S-CAP to
demand that the needs of the former workers be addressed. As a result
Mayor Jim Gordon was forced to make a statement and the workers have
written up a list of demands including no evictions and speedy access to
social assistance for those who need it which will be presented to city
officials tomorrow at 10am tomorrow. The former workers of Marketeers need
as much support as they can get especially given that the owner of
Marketeers declared bankruptcy today. An organizing meeting is being
held at 9:30am tomorrow at Gonga's in the Brady Square Plaza right across
from Tom Davies Square. Please come if you can and come to the meeting at
10am which should be in room C-12 or C-13 in back of the City
Council meeting room.
In solidarity,
Gary
