Treatment of conscientious objector Mehmet Bal

Dear Colonel,

War Resisters' International is very concerned about the news we receive on
the treatment of conscientious objector Mehmet Bal, who is imprisoned in
the
Military Prison in Adana. According to our information, Mehmet Bal is
forcefully dressed in prison uniform, and lead to medical examinations on a
daily basis, handcuffed. In protest against his treatment Mehmet Bal
declared a hunger strike.

War Resisters' International demands that Mehmet Bal's conscientious
objection to military service is respected, and this includes that he is not
forced to wear a military prison uniform. According to international human
rights standards, conscientious objection to military service is a
fundamental human right. This was pointed out by several resolutions of the
United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

War Resisters' International will inform the Special Rapporteur on Torture,
Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment at the UN Human
Rights
Commission in Geneva, and will urge the Special Rapporteur to take the
necessary steps to prevent cruel, ihmunan and dregrading treatment of
Mehmet
Bal.

War Resisters' International urges you to respect basic international human
rights standards, and the international standards of rights of prisoners.
This means that Mehmet Bal shouldn't be forced to wear a military uniform,
and that his physical integrity has to be respected.

War Resisters' International asks you to reply to this fax, and to explain
which measures you are taking in order to ensure that Mehmet Bal is treated
according to international standards.

Kind regards,

(Andreas Speck)
War Resisters' International
