Canadian activist prepared to defy Israeli court
By CP
TORONTO -- Canadian Jaggi Singh says he is prepared to
violate an Israeli court ruling and illegally enter the West
Bank or Gaza Strip if Palestinians want him there, the
activist told CTV Newsnet in an interview from Jerusalem
yesterday.
Singh said he'll make his decision over the next few days
after consulting with Palestinian activists who invited him
there, adding he's ready to face the consequences.
"I think the invitation to enter the West Bank or Gaza
doesn't come from the occupier, it comes from the people who
actually live there," he said. "And if Palestinians
activists and organizers think it is useful for
internationals to be there, I certainly will enter."
"I'll decide over the next few days based on what
Palestinian activists think would be useful."
Singh's comments follow an Israeli court ruling Monday that
let Singh into the country but ordered him to stay out of
Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The
ruling came two days after customs officials refused Singh
entry to Israel citing security concerns.
After Singh was denied entry Saturday, he refused to leave
Israel voluntarily and later won a temporary court
injunction preventing his deportation. The judge in Tel Aviv
was handed the case after a panel of supreme court justices
ruled they didn't have jurisdiction.
"I think it's really ironic for an Israeli court, which is
illegally occupying the West Bank and Gaza, to decide who
can't or can enter the country . . . I don't really put much
faith in the ruling," he said.
Singh has said he isn't a security threat and plans to write
about the Mideast country, particularly alleged human rights
abuses by Israel against Palestinians.
