 SANITY AT LAST
Almost a year after the twin towers suicide bombing, sanity has prevailed.
The Howard governments attempts to strip away what few common law rights
Australian's enjoy, without the threat of arbitrary detention, arrest and
imprisonment, will be blocked in the Senate in the next few days.  The
Australian Labor Party facing another term in the political wilderness, has
for the first time in over a decade made a stand that delineates it's
policies from the Liberal National Parties policies.

After facing a vigorous campaign that has included people from all walks of
life and all political persuasions, it has succumbed to a campaign that
focused on the idea that the A.S.I.O. bill was targeted at crushing internal
dissent, not fighting terrorism.  The Anarchist Media Institute and People
Against Regressive Legislation have been at the forefront of this movement.
While most other radical groups buried their heads in the sand and accepted
the A.S.I.O bill as a fait accompli, we placed our energies into the
campaign to block the A.S.I.O. bill.  We understood that without that common
law space, that gives Australian's the power to protest, the State would
have been able to crush any campaign it wanted to.

We would like to thank all those supporters who backed our efforts.  We
would like to thank all those people who wrote, sent e-mails, faxes, made
telephone calls and took part in the demonstrations and occupations which
were directed at the Australian Labour Party, to shame and encourage them to
block the A.S.I.O. bill in the Senate.  Without our supporter's active
participation in this campaign, the A.L.P. would not have blocked this
draconian legislation.  It's important we celebrate our victories and
acknowledge those involved in those victories.

The rejection of Howard's draconian A.S.I.O. bill in the Senate, is a
watershed in Australian radical history.  We have drawn a line in the sand,
beyond which the State has not been able to pass.  As we celebrate this
historic victory, it's important we remember the lesson, that the price of
freedom is eternal vigilance, by those who enjoy those freedoms.

PRIDE
I feel great pride in the way that the full weight of the Murdoch, Fairfax
press and the Federal government have been used to determine Mr. Ali
Bakhtiyari and his family.  First and foremost Mr. Bakhtiyari is an Afghani
and part of the minority Hazarah Community, a community that has experienced
persecution for centuries.  At the heart of the current conflict is the
question about whether Mr. Bakhtiyari and his family hail from Quetta in
Pakistan or from inside Afghanistan.

Itıs interesting to see how that debate about refugees has been reduced to
one of "truth" and "genuine" and "non-genuine" refugees.  To say that the
Bakhtiyari family are not "genuine" refugees and the "truth" has been served
by the exposure of Ali Bakhtiyariıs claim of his country of origin, is to
reduce the debate about who is and isnıt a refugee to a black and white
debate that revolves around geographical origin at a particular point in
time.

The Bakhtiyari family are one of the millions of Afghani refugees that have
been forced to eke out an existence on the Afghani / Pakistani border as a
result of a brutal war between the Soviet Union and the United States that
was fought for decades in proxy States across the world for control of the
worldıs resources.  In Afghanistan, Mozambique, Angola, Nicaragua and many
other hot spots, tens of millions were killed and displaced as the United
States and the Soviet Union fought their ideological battles.

The Bakhtiyariıs are a direct legacy of this struggle.  Men, women and
children find themselves displaced from their homelands and in difficult,
emotional, physical and political situations as a result of these struggles.
The reporting by the Fairfax and Murdoch press gives an account of one point
in time.  It does not take into account the background to that one point in
time.

The medicine dished out to the Bakhtiyari family by the bulk of the
Australian media, is similar to the treatment thatıs dished out to this
countries indigenous population.  The media is full of stories of
dysfunctional indigenous communities that look at one point in time.  They
donıt look at how a history of two hundred years of dispossession and
cultural genocide has created the conditions that manifest themselves in the
current situation.  To claim that the Bakhtiyari family are not "genuine"
refugees because Ali Bakhtiyari may have lied about one moment in time is
itself a lie.  The liars in this country are those government and opposition
members that have created the detention gulags that keep men, women and
children behind barbed wire in some of the remotest locations in Australia
for the crime of seeking asylum and finding a better life for themselves and
their families.  In the scheme of things Ali Bakhtiyariıs "lies" pale into
insignificance when compared with the lies that the Howard governmentıs
asylum seeker policies are based on.  Any one who thinks that the "truth"
behind the Bakhtiyari case changes anything about the current refugee
debate, doesnıt understand how Australiaıs policies are making Australians
international pariahs.

WHO ARE THE REAL SOCIAL ENGINEERS?
The Federal Minister for Family Servicesı pathetic argument that family
service payments should be tied to a government sponsored parenting program,
highlights the countries best kept secret about who the real social
engineers are in this country.  Every time the A.L.P., Democrats or Greens
attempt to have legislation passed through parliament, that affects peoples
personal behaviour, Australians are told by successive conservative
commentators and governments, that they are attempting to use parliament to
socially engineer society.

Historically, the shoe is on the other foot.  Conservative governments are
at the forefront of the social engineering battle.  They constantly use
legislation to create a society that mirrors their ideological agenda.
Larry Anthonyıs proposal isnıt as we are now being told, a poorly crafted
proposal that has little if any government support.  Anthony was flying a
kite for a government, that has a track record of introducing legislation
into parliament, that attempts to socially engineer society through punitive
based laws.

The Howard government has a proud track record of introducing and steering
legislation through parliament, whose sole purpose is social engineering.
The governmentıs successful attempts to overturn the Northern Territories
euthanasia laws, their attitudes to paid maternity leave, their attempts to
close down heroin injection rooms, their punitive approaches to Australians
who receive unemployment benefits, disability support pensions and single
parents benefits, as well as their attitude to single sex parents and
children, are just some of the ways they have attempted to create a society
that mirrors their ideological perception of how people should live their
lives.

The Howard governments social engineering agenda, had to date been
successfully couched, in terms that lulled people into a false sense of
security, because it was aimed at minorities.  Larry Anthonyıs pathetically
inept and dangerous approach to parenting has for the first time exposed the
federal governments social engineering agenda, to the harsh glare of
publicity.

PIE IN THE SKY
The Herald Sunıs Insight investigation into the relationship between Mammon
and the Christian churches (26/08), has missed one very important aspect of
how the churches are making money, in a period when congregations and direct
contributions are dwindling.  The majority of church profits are not made
from real estate deals or investments.  They are made from an increasingly
complex relationship between the church and State.

Over the past two decades, the clear-cut division that existed between
church and State has been blurred by the privatisation of public assets and
the subcontracting of public services, to the private sector.  The churches
have been some of the major beneficiaries of the privatisation mania, that
has swept Australia.  The election of the Howard government seven years ago,
opened up the doors to the treasury, to both Christian and non-Christian
churches.

The Howard governmentıs privatisation agenda has seen billions of dollars of
taxpayer funds diverted from the public education and health sector, to the
church based education and health care sector.  The partial privatisation of
welfare delivery systems by the Howard government, has seen churches battle
each other to win lucrative government contracts, to provide services to the
unemployed, the sick and the disadvantaged.  The churches have been the main
beneficiaries of the transfer of funds from the public, to the private
sector.

The churches addiction to tax payer funded health, education and welfare
programs, has stabilised their precarious financial standing, at the cost of
making them dependent on taxpayers funds.  This financial dependency has
been exploited by a government that now includes confidentiality clauses in
contracts, signed between them and the churches, which prevents churches
that take up government contracts, from criticising government policy.
Godıs cash no longer comes from the pockets of worshippers, it now comes
courtesy of the long suffering Australian taxpayer.  Thatıs why itıs
important that the churches tax-free status is removed.

BIAS?
The establishment of a Complaints Review Executive by the ABC Board to
tackle claims of political bias in the ABC, is an indication that the ABC
board is more interested in pandering to the peccadilloıs of a government
that unjustifiably believes that the ABC is a nest of radical activists,
than looking after the interests of those Australians who use the ABC.

The High Court of Australia has, over the past few years found that the
democratic process can only occur if there is a free exchange of ideas
within the community, especially during the electoral process.  The ABCıs
role is pivotal in this free exchange of ideas, because its coverage is not
limited by commercial concerns.  To date the ABC has not had to weigh up the
commercial consequences of running material that is offensive to a major
advertiser.  The creation of a Complaints Review Executive that specifically
examines complaints of political bias, places the government in the same
position that a major advertiser can have in a commercial media setting.

The Complaints Review Executives role is one of political censorship.  What
may seem to be bias to the government of the day and its supporters, may
just be the exposure of unpalatable consequences of government policy.  The
creation of an organ, which could be used to censor unpalatable and what at
first may seem to be unpopular views in the ABC, has profound ramifications
for ABC staff, especially those who are employed on short term contracts.
Itıs possible that those ABC teams and workers within the news and current
affairs department that are most effective, will find themselves before the
Complaints Review Executive time and time again.  As contracts come up for
periodic renewal, two things can happen, staff will self-censor and will not
pursue stories that may see them appear before the Complaints Review
Executive, or they may find that their appearance before the Complaints
Executive will be used as an excuse not to renew their contracts.

ABC staff, their associations and ABC viewers and listeners need to actively
resist this pathetically transparent attempt of political censorship, by an
ABC board that is more interested in pandering to the needs of the
government of the day to censor debate, than protect the political
independence of the ABC.  All ABC staff both salaried and contract, should
as a matter of principal, refuse to appear before this potential Star
Chamber.

ANARCHIST QUESTION AND ANSWER
Q.  What role does spontaneity play in an anarchist society?
A.    A lot less than most people including some anarchists imagine,
spontaneity isnıt a central feature of anarchist thought and action.
Although anarchist decision-making processes can result in rapid changes in
strategy and activities, these changes are not independent of an "external
cause".  Anarchists donıt do things for the hell of doing things, they do
them for a reason.
Structure not spontaneity is the central feature of anarchist thought and
action.  The difference between structures created and used by anarchists
and structures created and used by other people is that those people in an
anarchist society who are affected by the establishment of particular
structures to deal with particular issues, make the decisions about how
these structures are created and operate.  This doesnıt mean that those
structures that have been created are set in concrete.  Different situations
may call for alterations to established structures or the replacement of
these structures, although these structures may have served the community
well in the past.
Spontaneity isnıt frowned on or discouraged in an anarchist society.  It is
just one of the range of human ways of acting that are part and parcel of an
anarchist community.  Acting spontaneously isnıt inherently anarchistic.
Itıs a part of the rich tapestry of life within an anarchist community.
Elevating spontaneity to one of the central tenets of anarchist thought and
action does anarchism and anarchists a disservice.
People living in an anarchist community have the freedom to act
spontaneously or in any other manner they like.  If their actions impinge on
other peoplesı freedoms, they will come under individual community pressure
to modify their behaviour.  Whether they do or donıt act spontaneously isnıt
the problem.  If there is a problem, that problem revolves around how their
behavior effects other people, not whether their behaviour is premeditated
or not.

ACTION BOX - CONSUMER BOYCOTTS
We consume, therefore we are, seems to be the 21st century post modern
mantra that post-industrial society lives its life by.  Consumerism has
become the lifeblood and the Archilles heel of the new improved capitalism.
Although consumer boycotts will not bring revolutionary change, they can
exert pressure on the State and the corporate world.  The rent and shopping
boycotts practiced by the black community in South Africa in the apartheid
era helped to loosen the grip the apartheid regime had on South Africa.
Before you race out onto the streets screaming out "down with brand X", you
need to do your homework. Find out as much as you can about the company, how
theyıre structured, who owns it, what type of profits they make and how they
distribute these profits. Work out what your objectives are, do you want to
financially cripple the company, change work practices, stop producing a
certain line of goods or expose the methods they use to make a profit.
Once youıve decided what company youıre targeting and what you hope to
achieve, you need to work out who your calls for a boycott are aimed at.
There is no point embarking on a bruising no holds barred campaign that
could involve legal challenges to what you are doing, if you donıt know who
youıre targeting your campaign at.  The last thing to remember is that the
commercial driven media has no interest in running stories on campaigns that
affect their advertising revenue.
So you will have to do most of the legwork, even community based radio and
television stations will not take up your campaign because they may face
legal challenges.  You will need to rely on the old fashioned leaflet, cyber
space, t-shirts, buttons and stickers, picket lines and demonstrations to
build your consumer boycott campaign.  If youıre done your homework and are
willing to put in the hard yards, you can have a significant effect on a
companyıs profitability.  Once their bottom line is threatened, they will be
forced to review their practices.

AUSTRALIAN RADICAL HISTORY
THE EUREKA SERIES NO. 30
SEVEN DOWN, SIX TO GO.
The last six prisoners Thomas Dignum, James McFie Campbell, Jacob Sorensen,
John Phelan, William Molloy and Henry Reed were tried together before young
judge Raymond Barry.  Stawell the Attorney-General, dropped all charges
against Thomas Dignum as the authorities claimed they didnıt have any
evidence to tie him to the Eureka stockade.  The other five faced the music,
but within a few hours they were all acquitted.  They were cheered as they
left the court by the thousands of people who had gathered outside, to
ensure justice was not only seen to be done but done.
Of the five who were tried, James McFie Campbell was the most interesting.
The Sydney Morning Herald, the only newspaper hat supported Hotham,
described Campbell as a member of the "mongrel crew of German, Italian and
negro rebels" that was responsible for the Eureka rebellion.  Campbell was a
black man who hailed from Kingston, Jamaica.  Interestingly, Thomas Dignum
who was born in Sydney and had charges of treason dropped against him, had
been actively involved in the rebellion on the 3rd December.  Itıs possible
Stawell tried to cut his losses by removing Dignum from the last treason
trial because he believed a local jury would never convict a native born
Australian.
The Attorney-General Stawell, felt that he had a better chance of convicting
three, Irishmen Molloy, Phelan, Reed, a Jew Sorensen and a negro Campbell if
charges against the only native born Australian among them Thomas Dignum
were dropped.  Phelan was a friend of Peter Lalor who rumour had it, had
been involved in the establishment of a sly grog shop at the corner of
Latrobe and Elizabeth Street in Melbourne in 1853.  Although Henry Reed was
acquitted of treason, Sergeant Major Michael Lalor of the mounted police,
was shot at with a long piece by Henry Reed, after Michael Lalor had shot
Peter Lalor in the shoulder.
The only interesting aspect of the trial was the judgeıs attempts to bring
God into the courtroom.  Before the jury was sent away to consider its
verdict, Barry took the opportunity to tell the jury (after a thunderstorm
temporarily halted proceedings) that "the eye of heaven was upon them and
their verdict".  Even the involvement of the deity by Judge Barry in the
proceedings didnıt sway the jury, hey found the last five prisoners not
guilty of treason and the whole sorry judicial farce came to an end.

 BOOK REVIEW
"THE EMERGENCE OF THE DOMINANT WARRING SPECIES OF CARNIVORE"
(A Collection of Poems from the Ether)
by Sebastian Wood. 1999, Published by Eidolon Books Canberra A.C.T.
ISBN 0958595518
Sebastian Woodıs contribution to the genre although not earth shattering,
shows great potential.  Some of his poems appear to be more truncated essays
than poems.  Whatıs different about Woodıs work is that they are grounded in
a reality that flits from global to the local to the personal.
The book, a 104 page offering of 90 poems, begins with the intriguing idea
"What is a human without an Earth?"  The anthology is divided into three
distinct sections ŒThought Formsı ŒThe Memory of Starsı and ŒThird Genesisı.
The main criticism I have of Woodıs work is that there is a sameness about
his poetry.  Although the subject matter is diverse, the way topics, ideas
and feelings are expressed are similar.
A Concise History of Evolution
"Raindrops are bacteria from space
Cosmic seeds that formed the human race
With evolution by invasion; the way natural selection screens
Natureıs alien viral switches, which reactive dormant genes
Until the sleeping potential of the nervous system is set free
And unconsciousness emerges with physical electronic complexity"
one of Sebastianıs shortest poems, is an example of how Wood attempts to
place his thoughts down on paper.
My favorite among Sebastianıs 90 poems is "Terris Naturalis", a poem that
plays with the idea of "Terra Nullis".  One of the best lines in this poem
"The Koori people collect their elders bones
And bury them under a culture of cellular phones"
encapsulates a complex subject in two lines.  The image conjured in the
readerıs mind by these two lines inter-links 214 years European occupation
of the land with an indigenous presence that spins over 40,000 years.
Sebastian Woodıs ŒThe Emergence of the Dominant Warring Species of Carnivore
(A Collection of Poems from the Ether)" are the outpourings of an emerging
Australian poet.  His work attempts to make sense of who and what we are as
individuals, within a community, on a planet on the edges of an unending
universe.  With time, patience and effort, his outpourings will find a space
in the phalanx of those few Australian poets whoıve been able to hold up a
mirror to Australian society.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION
Thereıs a real war going on in Australia, not the phoney war against
terrorism or the virtual war against Iraq, or the war against poverty or
disease.  Itıs a much more insidious affair.  Itıs a new type of war, a war
that involves men, women and children.  Doctors have been at the front line
of this war for well over two decades.  Now theyıve been pushed aside and
everybody has become a target.  If youıre too fat or too thin, unhappy,
depressed, ugly, not tall enough, your breasts are too big or too small,
your buttocks sag or you just plain bored, youıre in the firing line.
Over the last few months, the war has gained momentum.  Itıs being fought in
television land, in cyberspace, on the wireless, in magazines, in newspapers
and in pharmacies near you.  Every time you enter a pharmacy, you are
confronted by campaigns that just happen to tout for prescription drugs
manufactured by transnational pharmaceutical companies.  Your problem is
their problem.  They care.  Leaflets, buttons, cassette tapes discretely
show you they care.  Their latest offering is couched in images that pull at
the heartstring.  In the latest campaign pursued by one of the worldıs
largest pharmaceutical companies, a young bride in her wedding gown, not too
fat, not too thin, not too ugly, not too beautiful smiles directly at you,
she cares.
We learn that sheıs lost 15 kilograms so she can squeeze into her wedding
gown.  Weıre told how to diet and how fat is bad for us and that we could
all do with losing a few kilograms.  All you have to do is take a leaflet to
your local doctor and ask them how you can lose weight.  Thatıs not too
difficult is it?  Doctors are becoming oblivious to transnational
pharmaceutical company entreaties to use their drugs to solve lifestyle
issues.   It seems doctors have become jaded with stationary and equipment
that bears pharmaceutical company logos.
So your caring friendly transnational pharmaceutical corporation is using
your local pharmacy to get you to badger your local doctor for the latest
prescription to solve your lifestyle problem.  If your doctor wonıt do it,
things being what they are, the doctor down the road will be more than happy
to write you a script so you can buy the latest and greatest pharmaceutical
offering and change your life.  Well thatıs what they want us to believe.




STOP PRES
REWRITING HISTORY
As the Anarchist Age Weekly Review goes to press, there is a deliberate
attempt by sections of the media to rewrite history.  We are told by
commercial outlets as well as the A.B.C. that John Howardıs contribution to
life in this country has been an important one.  As Howard decides whether
heıs going to retire next year, a conscious attempt is being made by the
Prime Ministerıs Office to rewrite his role in Australian history.
We are told he is a great man, a political genius, a man whose record speaks
for itself.  What record I hear you ask yourself?  His attempts to make
Australians "comfortable and relaxed" have created an anxious inward looking
community that canıt see beyond its immediate future.  Most people would be
scratching their heads to find (apart from Australiaıs intervention in East
Timor) an example of the Prime Ministerıs wise rule.
When you examine Howardıs contribution to life in this country, you begin to
realise what a myopic, self-centred community we have become as a
consequence of policies personally pursued by Howard.  Some of his
outstanding achievements include the "bucket loads of extinguishment" the
governmentıs Wik legislation delivered to land owners, the introduction of
draconian anti dissent legislation dressed up as anti terrorist legislation,
the privatisation of most of Australiaıs public assets, the introduction of
legislation to curb what little power unions have to look after their
members interests, the introduction of policies that have made scapegoats of
people on unemployment and disability support pensions, backing legislation
to overturn the Northern Territories euthanasia laws and the Prime
Ministerıs proud boast that Australia is the United States "regional
deputy".
Howardıs political ascendancy is inter-linked with his ability to harness
the darker impulses within Australian society.  He has never been, as he
likes to portray himself, a leader.  His policies are the policies of a man
who has built his reputation on the prejudices that exist within Australian
society.  His contribution to Australian history will be found in the
footnotes, not the body of any work thatıs published on the contributions
Australian Prime Ministers have made to Australia.

Prague is currently under water from "global warming" forcing the rivers to
burst their banks. Prague was used for the film's sets of 19th Century, East
End London's Whitechapel. The costumes, corpses and visual effects are
suitably horrible; as are the "cockney" accents of American actors Johnny
Depp and Heather Graham !
Jack the Ripper the infamous "serial killer" committed five henious,
ritualistic murders during a ten week period in London in the autumn of
1988. Gossip, rumour and terror errupted and scapegoats targetted. He was
never caught. A detective on the case Abberline is addicted to opium, and
alcoholic - absinthe as drunk in Moulon Rouge and danced by green fairy
Kylie Minogue - plagued by the visions of grisly deaths.
This film is based on Alan Moore's popular 'graphic novel' ( = adult comic)
>From Hell, which was once banned in Australia. Hell spins the horrific
events unravelling a conspiracy involving the highest powers in England. The
class hierarchy from pimp gangsters to Special Branch, Masonic Lodges and
the Royal family exploits, amongst many proles and women sex-workers.
The Hughes directed Menace II Society and Dead Presidents (war vets rob
banks wearing Prez masks!) and push ghetto poverty 'in ya face' be it recent
or past, black or white dwelled.
There are many suspects for the whodunnit and @ge readers may be amused as I
was at the conclusion.
A very bloody dysfunctional family saga, with a political twist.

RECLAIMING THE RADICAL SPIRIT OF THE EUREKA REBELLION

The Anarchist Media Institute is inviting everyone who is interested in
reclaiming The Radical Spirit of the Eureka Rebellion, to join us on Tuesday
3RD of December at the Eureka Stockade site in Ballarat, in Victoria, to
celebrate the 148th Anniversary of the Eureka Rebellion.  Itıs time we
reclaimed our history.  Over the next 9 months we will keep you informed
about developments.  We want to bring a banner 4 meters long x 1.2 meters
high, to the celebrations with a representation of the original Eureka Flag,
not the stylised flag we have in the graphic.  We need to raise 750 dollars
to have a magnificent banner made.  We would like to have the banner
manufactured by July 2002, so it can be used to raise awareness of the
celebrations on the 3rd of December.  Yes youıve guessed it, weıre asking
long suffering readers to donate the 750 dollars to make the banner.
Everybody who donates money towards the banner will receive an A4 Reclaiming
The Radical Spirit of the Eureka Rebellion certificate, to acknowledge their

Oh no, it happened again, that time of year snuck up on me like an ambush.
How bloody irreverent of me to have forgotten! (not yet like the established
annual capitalist orgies of materialist consumerism named Christmas and
Easter, thereıs no several weeks, or months, "build-up" or forewarning.)
Over several days we get treated to an annual revisitation of a disturbingly
large number of overweight "WALLYS" dressed in very poofy looking
jump-suits, with "Californian Poppy"-ed hair and sporting 60ıs era
"mutton-chops" and ridiculous sunglasses whoıve been totally unable to do
anything more original or exciting with heir lives than to make an abysmal
attempt at impersonating and imitating their chosen idol ­ an obese,
drug-addicted ex-entertainer who "cashed in his chips" and "rolled up his
swag" back in the late Jurassic period of the music recording industry!
Aging, teary-eyed females sob and lament about how he was the "only one",
"the one and only", how he "came down from God and left again" and how there
will "never, ever be an other", etc, blah blah.
Various ancient motion clips and images of the said Deity appear on every
T.V. channel and in every newspaper with more nauseating frequency than the
daily installments of John Howardıs hairy-browed, simian mug! (and that is
serious saturation folks)
Legions of the faithful make their Haj-like pilgrimage to the holiest shrine
of "Graceland" to fulfill their earthly mission and duty of filing past the
"Sanctus Sanctorum" before massing in the candle-lit vigils of "Hail Elvis"
solemnity. (I assume, not before first paying their very hefty admission
fee!)
The latest news is that some blessed statue of the said king, has been
observed to be weeping tears down its tender concrete jowls!
ENOUGH! ENOUGH! Please, some of us have had quite enough!
