NO GLOBALISATION WITHOUT DIRECT DEMOCRACY ANARCHIST MEDIA INSTITUTE

FLUSHED WITH PRIDE
I'm so proud to be standing side by side with my Prime Minister Johnnie
fifth columnist Howard a man of principle. I'm so proud that the Australian
government under the direction of the fifth columnist unleashed the special
Armed Services Australia's crack Anti terrorist unit, the Australian Army,
Navy and Airforce to deal with the 433 unarmed refugees on the good ship
Tampa.

I'm so proud we let those people who had been picked up at sea from their
sinking vessel in the waters between Australia and Indonesia rot in empty
containers on the Norwegian ship.

I'm so proud of the lesson we have taught all those ships that honour the
most important code of the sea, to pick up people in distress, do so at your
own peril, if you do you'll be punished for your efforts by the Australian
state.

I'm flushed with pride about how Johnnie kept his promise to keep the
Afghani refugees off Australian soil by striking a deal with Mauru that will
cost The Australian Tax Payer tens of millions of dollars. What are you
nerds complaining about, it's only tax payers money and if what it takes is
tens of millions of dollars for our fifth columnist One Nation Prime
Minister to save face so be it. Most importantly of all I'm so proud of
those 75% of Australians who have supported the Prime Ministers actions to
the hilt. I'm proud of their Naz I like devotion to duty. I'm proud of
their narrow minded insular opinions and actions. I'm proud of living in a
nation that has displayed its rancid heart to the world. I'm proud of
living in a country that would turn away Jesus Christs mum heavy with child
from any empty stables we may have. Jesus Christ needs to understand that
although we live in Gods own country he can't come in unless he's got the
right papers. The only thing I'm not proud about is that those pesky civil
Libertarians and the Federal Courts may undo all the good work that Johnnies
done. Let's all cross our fingers and pray that the Federal Courts do us
proud.

WHERE TO RAYMOND HOSER?
The law grinds slowly and inextricably when activists are targeted by the
state. One of Australia's best known corruption authors, Raymond Hoser the
author of Victoria Police Corruption 1 and 2, finds himself facing
bankruptcy and a long gaol term. Hoser is no stranger when it comes to
court appearances. In 1988 he was sentenced to goal on a series of false
charges which were overturned years later, when the police informant
confessed that the charges were trumped up.

Hoser's next appearance before the courts is scheduled for the 23rd of
October.
Although he won a number of private defamation cases in the Victorian
Supreme Court last year about material he pushed in Victoria Police
Corruption 1 and 2, he now faces a charge of contempt brought against him by
the Victorian Attorney General, Rob Hulls.

You have to wonder why the Attorney General's department is so keen to have
these books banned? Hoser has won a number of defamation cases about the
material published in the books. (Both books have been reviewed in previous
issues of the Anarchist Age Weekly Review). Another very interesting aspect
of this case is the corporate and state run media blackout of the case.
Media outlets that are keen to crow about media censorship in third world
and authoritarian countries are not so keen to open their mouths about
what's going on. Although the media hordes descended on the Victorian
Supreme Court of a preliminary hearing on the 13th of August, not one word
or television image appeared about the case in the corporate and state run
media.

Raymond's case has profound implications, not only for himself, but for any
other activists that challenges the state. Like the proposed Peaceful
Assemblies Bill, the Bracks Labour government is intent on squashing any
opposition. The freedom to publish is an important right that is
particularly guaranteed under the Australian Constitution. Attempts to
remove this right by dragging people before the Courts on contempt charge
needs to be resisted.

Raymond Hoser has asked people to come along to the court case on the 23rd
of October at the Victorian Supreme Court. He has also asked supporters to
contact the media and hound them until they publish material about the case.
It's possible he'll be buried by the state unless the public becomes aware
of what's happening.

EXCELLENT REPRESENTATION OF
HISTORY AND CULTURE
The Prime Minister: the man who refuses to apologise to the Stolen
Generations, the man who extinguished native title on pastoral leases, the
man who refuses to live at the Lodge in Canberra but lives at Kirrabilli
House on Sydney Harbour because the move could interfere with his
childrenısı education (while he expects other peopleıs children to move to
stay on the dole) this man is at it again.

Marking the centenary of the Australian Flag, the PM raised it in Melbourne
on Monday. The man who unleashed the S.A.S. and Australian military forces
to turn away unarmed refugees, expressed some illuminating thoughts and
sentiments about this flag. He believed that it "..was an excellent
representation of Australian history and culture".

Excuse me? Did he actually say that? Iım afraid he did.

I looked at the Aussie flag: red, white and blue, the Union Jack in a
corner, the Southern Cross and a six pointed star representing Australiaıs
states. I then thought to myself "Good representation of Australiaıs history
and culture? Whoıs this man kidding?" Where, on the flag, is the
representation of the 40,000 years of continuous occupation of land by
Australiaıs indigenous people? I canıt see anything to signify their prior
occupation of the land. Considering that Australiaıs indigenous population
are not mentioned in the Constitution, and that it took 67 years for the
Australian state to recognise that they actually existed and had any rights
as human beings itıs no surprise to see that John "Fifth Columnist" Howard
doesnıt believe their existence should be acknowledged on the Australian
Flag.

Still looking at the flag, I searched for representations of the
multicultural element of our history and culture. When considering the five
million immigrants from every corner of the globe, who have entered our
country since Federation, it becomes clear that the flag does not
acknowledge their contribution.

We need to remember that the flag is 100 years old and that the "God, Queen
and Country" brigade who ruled the roost at the time thought, like the Prime
Minister, that everything good is British. The only part of the Australian
flag that remains relevant is the Southern Cross. In 1853, the Eureka
diggers raised the Southern Cross and stated, "We swear, by the Southern
Cross, to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and
liberties". John "Fifth Columnist" Howard didnıt mention that it doesnıt
seem to represent his selective view of our history and cultureŠ.

WHAT PRICE IS A LEG OF LAMB?
What price is a leg of lamb? It seems that the Australian people are being
asked to give up what little sovereignty they still enjoy for the privilege
of selling a leg of lamb to the United States. John Howard the man who
unleashed the Australian military forces to stop 430 unarmed Afghanistan
men, women and children from breaching our sovereignty, is about to shuffle
off to the United States, and like the good deputy he is, is about to hand
over Australia's sovereignty to the sheriff, on a gilt edged platter.

The Free Trade Agreement that Howard is proposing is a recipe for disaster.
For the sake of a leg of lamb the Howard government is willing to remove
quarantine restrictions that have protected Australian agriculture for
decades. He is willing to remove what little cultural protection the
Australian media now enjoys and allow the United States entertainment
industry carte blanche entry into Australia submerging what little cultural
independence we have in a deluge of United States material.

The coalition is also willing to dilute Australia's new packaging laws
removing consumer's rights to know whether they are or aren't consuming
genetically altered food. Most importantly of all the government is willing
to abolish the Australian Foreign Investment review committee giving United
States financial markets and corporations open access to all the country's
corporations, resources and institutions- even those corporations and
institutions who's takeover by foreign interests would be against the
national interest.

Interestingly, while great chunks of the mass media have fanned the public
flames of discontent about a boatload of refugees breaching the countries
sovereignty, few if any, will display the same vigour in opposing a Free
Trade agreement with the United States - an agreement which strips us of
what little real sovereignty we still enjoy.

ITıS GOOD FOR YOU
Long live the pokies! Victorian poker machine players lost a staggering 2.3
billion dollars in the last financial year. A decent amount of loot, in
anybodyıs language. Listening to our brothers and sisters in the gambling
industry and the Bracks Labor government, you could be forgiven for thinking
that this was a bonus for the community. Seven hundred million dollars, the
largest amount collected by any state, were ploughed back into State revenue
a significant proportion of the Victorian State budget.

Unfortunately, the figures that are being bandied about have more to do with
spin than reality. Although seven hundred million dollars seems like a lot
of money, when you look at the costs to the community stemming from the
gambling industry, you soon realise that more money is spent by the
Victorian State Government to patch up the problems that are caused by
gambling, than the revenue raised in taxes. If you compare apples with
apples, not apples with pears, it soon becomes apparent that the social and
financial damage caused by the policies far outweigh any gains to the state
or individual punters.

If you look at the money that is embezzled to feed gambling habits, the cost
of gambling induced suicides and the cost to the families of gamblers, you
quickly realise that the social and human costs again outweighs any profits
that are diverted into the state coffers. If the industry is serious about
eliminating problem gamblers from the system, and is willing to pay for the
social and human costs the industry exacts, it would go out of business by
the end of the year. If the gambling industry was forced to hire 24-hour
counsellors at every venue, if they were asked to repay the money embezzled
and to pick up the tab for gambling induced suicides, very few, if any,
gambling outlets would be able to remain in business.

ANARCHIST QUESTION AND ANSWER
Q. How would an anarchist society handle a refugee crisis?
A. Refugees would be welcome within an anarchist community. Their basic
needs for food, shelter and security would be met by the community. What
happens to them long term becomes a matter for community discussion.
Whether they are able to settle permanently will depend on the community's
access to resources and their need for labour. If there are not enough
resources to go around, the federation a particular anarchist community
belongs to, would be asked to provide assistance and, if possible, permanent
residence to those seeking asylum.
As the standard of living is relatively uniform within a federation of
anarchist communities, it's unlikely that economic refugees would knock on
an anarchist communityıs door. If they do, the individuals inability to
accumulate personal wealth, would act as both a short term and long-term
disincentive for refugees who wish to immigrate to improve their personal
wealth. Refugees presenting to an anarchist community, would do so because
of political, cultural and social reasons. Those that are willing to share
the common wealth and participate in the life of the community, would be
welcome. Those who want to use the community to accumulate personal wealth,
will soon realise that anarchism is not their cup of tea.
Anarchist communities extend and expect free passage within the federations
they belong to. They also grant free passage to whoever wants to travel
through their community. All refugees are extended basic courtesies; those
that want to stay are welcome if there are enough resources. If resources
are limited, they will be directed to other anarchist communities that are
trying to increase their numbers. Anarchists understand that everybody is a
potential refugee - that's why they are willing to help those that are
fleeing from persecution.

ACTION BOX
INITIATING CAMPAIGNS
Most campaigns, in which we are involved, are reactive. We are reacting
because of government or corporate policies. Although reactive campaigns
are important, itıs also important to extend the envelope and initiate
campaigns. Itıs essential we extend as well as defend the gains we have
made. With the blurring of the difference between Government and
Opposition, and the corporatisation of the private sector, it is becoming
increasingly difficult to initiate new campaigns, let alone defend what we
have won.
Even the Trade Union movement is having difficulty in improving their
membersı conditions and wages, spending most of their time involved in
rearguard actions to defend what they have achieved in the past.
Initiating new campaigns by making new demands for access to power and
wealth puts both the State and the corporate sector on the back foot. They
have to respond to you and justify why they canıt meet those demands. They
have to divert resources; resources which they would normally use to put
pressure on you to fight the gains you have already made, and use those
resources to fight the new demands you are making.
Well-planned attacks can be the best form of defence. The greater the
pressure to which governments, institutions and the corporate sector are
exposed, the greater the possibility that they will agree with new
campaigns, demanding the further sharing of power and wealth. Sit down
think about the activities you are involved in. Are they all reactive? If
yes, you need to create and become involved in new campaigns that challenge
both the corporate sector and the State. Youıll be surprised. The pressures
applied to you, to give up what you have gained, will quickly dissipate and
be replaced with the attempts to get you to drop the new set of demands you
have added to your bowstring. Itıs been proven over and again, that well
planned attacks can be the best form of defence.

AUSTRALIAN ANARCHIST HISTORY
Bernard O'Dowd 1866-1953
O'Dowd a child prodigy that read Milton's, "Paradise Lost", at age 8, was
born in Beaufort Victoria. He was employed as a head teacher at a Catholic
School in Ballarat, but was dismissed for heresy. He opened up his own
school in Beaufort. In 1886, at age 20, he moved to Melbourne where he
found employment in 1887 as an Assistant - Librarian in the Supreme Court
Library, working for the Victorian colonial and State government until 1935,
retiring as Chief Parliamentary Draughtsman.
He joined the Melbourne Lyceum, the educational and social arm of the
Australian Secular Society in 1886. In 1888, a number of anarchists
associated with the A.S.A, who were members of the Melbourne Anarchist club
(Australia's first anarchist group formed in 1886) were expelled from the
A.S.A. O'Dowd joined the progressive Lyceum, which was made up of the
anarchists Monty Miller, Upham, Brookhouse and Nicholls, as well as other
radical members who had been expelled from the Melbourne Lyceum. He had
become the editor of the Tetor in 1888 just before the split.
His poem "Hoist the Flag" Lyceum published in the Lyceum Tutor in 1888,
outlined ideas that were very similar to anarchism. O'Dowd had become a
friend of the Melbourne anarcho-communist Jack Andrews, and in 1897, O'Dowd
and two others set up the radical paper Tocsin. In 1898, he was co-editor
of Tocsin with Jack Andrews. He continued to be an editor, contributor and
financial supporter of Tocsin until Andrews died of tuberculosis in 1903.
During these six years, he published numerous radical poems, and used the
pages of the Tocsin to express his opposition to Federation and The Boer
War. In 1902, he issued a pamphlet "Conscience and Democracy" which opposed
the Boer War.
Between 1903 to 1921, O'Dowd turned his attention to poetry and published
six poetry books. Dawnward (1903), The Silent Land (1906), Dominion of the
Boundary (1907), The Seven Deadly Sins (1909), The Bush (1912) and Alma
Venus (1921). His most well known pamphlet "a plea for purpose in poetry",
Poetry Militant, was published in 1909. In it he asks, "Why should poetry
be militant nowadays? I hear some ask Because Š. This is an Age of Revolt
and Reconstruction, because the Poet is the father and mother of wise
rebellion and because he, being in touch with the Infinite, the Permanent is
most potent and far-reaching stimulator of Reconstruction".
O'Down was married and had five sons. In 1920, he left his wife and moved
in with Marie Pitt, the editor of the Victorian Socialist. He lived with
her until her death in 1948. He and Pitt became members of the Unitarian
church, denied the trinity and saw the historical Jesus Christ as an
anarchist.
Although O'Dowd grappled constantly with the conflict between his work for
the government and his radical politics, according to the Australian
Dictionary of Biography (ADB) "His optimism about human destiny never
failed", and a few months before his death at 87, "he affirmed his almost
religious belief in anarchist communism".
I'm heavily in debted to P.D. Gardner, the author of Mountain Echoes

 BOOK REVIEW
Gippsland Massacres
The Destruction of the Kurnai Tribes 1800-1860, By P. D. Gardner
3rd edition 2001 Ngarok Press
1st published 1983
ISBN 1875 54 315
It's appropriate that I review Gippsland Massacres in the same week that
over 95% of callers to talkback radio in Australia support the Australian
Governmentıs decision to not extend the hand of welcome to 460 refugees who
were rescued from the high seas by a Norwegian cargo ship. P. D. Gardner's
meticulous research, clearly highlights that similar viewpoint that drive
this inhumane response, were held by the early European colonists. Over 95%
of the early Gippsland settlers participated massacres that reduced the
Kurnai people who lived in Gippsland for over 30,000 years, from a
population of over 3000, to little more than 200.
P. D. Gardner describes a frontier war - nothing more, nothing less. The
Kurnai men, women and children were seen as little more than vermin, who
were getting in the way the pastoralistıs expansionary plans. As soon as
the pastoralistıs intruded on Kurnai land in October 1840, their cattle were
speared and the stockman dispersed. As the pastoralistıs moved in with
their cattle, the Kurnais' traditional food supplies dried up and they were
forced to spear cattle to survive. This put in motion a series of events
that saw the almost total destruction of the Kurnai clans within a 20-year
period.
Isolated murders of shepherds and stockman were followed by massacres of the
local inhabitants. The squatters who moved into Gippsland were surprised by
the ferocity of the resistance of the Kurnai. Sailors, whalers and
castaways had hardened the Gippsland tribes with 40 years of raids. They
understood that their very survival was at stake as they had been shown no
quarter by Europeans who carried out raids to kidnap Kurnai women to use as
concubines while they setup sealing and whaling camps along the Gippsland
coastline. After the initial massacres, the native police were brought in
by the Victorian colonial authorities to finish the job of killing the
Kurnai under the direction of the colonial authorities. They did.
The clashes in Gippsland were, according to P.D. Gardner, a clash between
two cultures, expansionary capitalism and the balanced economy.
Expansionary capitalism won. P.D. Gardner makes the strong point that,
"Šthe so called blooding in of Australian history and which many historians
see as the beginning of Australian history, is not to be found in the
courageous rebellion of Eureka or the futile valour of Gallipoli, but in the
cowardly murders of Warrigul Creek", - the scene of one of the worst
massacres that has occurred in Australian history.
P.D. Gardnerıs Gippsland Massacres, is a microcosm of the hidden and secret
history of the European colonisation of Australia. Within this well
documented and extensively referenced book, are buried the reasons that
shape the heart of a people who cannot recognise their past, apologise for
the harm they have caused and who's representatives are incapable of
extending a helping hand to the most disadvantaged in our community.
This excellent book is available from the publishers. Ngarak Press, P.O. Box
18, Ensay, Victoria Australia.
Note: Mountain Echoes No. 72 in this issue of the Anarchist Age Weekly
Review for the authors' opinion about quadrants attempts to deny that
Australian massacres ever occurred.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION
Yellow taxis, slowing down, parking. Drivers emerge and walk towards a
plain glass door. All day, seven days a week, taxi drivers pull up near
this glass door, alight from their Money Making Machines and walk through
that door. Short, dark men with untidy beards and wavy hair, are drawn to a
squat brick building that has seen better days. Worried looking men
hurriedly pass through the door into another world.
Drug den? House of ill repute? Something else who knows? All I know is
that a steady stream of men go through that door, day in day out.
After years of wondering, curiosity got the better of me. I stopped behind
a parked Yellow taxi and peered at the door. Two men strode through it and
headed towards another parked Yellow taxi. A woman, her hair covered,
crossed their path and walked in. I was too far from the action and I
couldnıt make out what was written across the door. Pedestrians moved past,
not even glancing at the yellow portal that caused me such consternation.
Another Yellow taxi pulled up behind me and a serious-looking, clean-shaven
young man leapt out of the taxi and bolted straight for the door. Maybe he
had a full bladder?
I couldnıt stand not knowing what was going on within, so I made a move and
headed toward the door. Upstairs coffee shop, brothel, Yellow taxi depot
what will it be? My money was on the inner city brothel. As I came closer
to the door, I could make out the plain white writing on the glass "City
Mosque".
I turned around, hopped back into my car and drove off, reflecting on my
imagination and how it had bettered me.

STOP PRESS
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
The ferocity of many Australianıs responses to the 460 refugees on the
Tampa, and the inability and unwillingness of the same group to say sorry to
the stolen generations, is interlinked. The Prime Minister and his
supporterıs responses are fuelled by a series of myths that define the
Australian character. Myth piled upon myth has created the necessary
conditions that give decent, responsible people an intellectual and
emotional justification for words and actions that deny the most
disadvantaged basic human rights.
Our inability as a people to acknowledge the brutality of a past, which has
been denied by successive generations of leaders, has created conditions
that allow opinions to flourish that wouldnıt have been out of place in Nazi
Germany. Itıs important to remember that atrocities are not committed by
monsters but by ordinary people who have been told and believe that their
future and their childrenıs future is dependent on doing whatever it takes
to protect their way of life.
Until the unfinished business of Reconciliation between indigenous and
non-indigenous Australians is resolved, we will be plagued by the
uncertainties that we, as a nation of thieves, feels every time our
occupation of this land is threatened. The fair go society will only become
a reality when we sign a treaty with the countryıs indigenous people. Until
this is done, we will never be able to move forward and build a society that
rests on solid foundations not whimsical, ephemeral myths about who we are
and where we come from.

All the News That Fits

At least three Liberal Party branches made false claims for GST credits.
One branch which has admitted making a false claim is in the Groom
electorate, held by Ian McFarlane, the Minister for Small Business. The
branch claimed the credits despite a party official warning it was "cheating
on the government".

At least one South Australian psychiatric hospital is refusing to treat
people from the refugee detention centres. Ten refugee applicants at
Woomera detention centre have been treated for psychological illness in the
last month. Most are believed to have attempted suicide or serious
self-harm. Workers at the centre say that suicide and self-mutilation are
daily occurrences.

438 refugees on board a Norwegian freighter have been refused permission to
land in Australia. SAS troops have boarded the boat, and the government
intends to force the refugees to be towed to another country such as Nauru.
The refugees are mostly fleeing Afghanistan, which is ruled by a religious
fundamentalist dictatorship called the Taliban. The refugees are stuck off
the coast of Christmas Island. The were rescued by the freighter after
their boat started to sink. Prime Minister John Howard said at least some
of the refugees were faking or exaggerating illness. Captain Arne Rinnan
contradicted this, saying there were four people unconscious and two
pregnant women complaining of stomach pains. A later message from the ship
said that fifteen people were now unconscious.
One Nation MP David Oldfield congratulated the government. He said the
refugees were sea-going troublemakers. Mr Oldfield said it might be
considered Christian charity to help them, but it should not be lost on
anyone that they were largely Moslems. Immigration Minister Phillip Ruddock
compared the refugees to hijackers. Labor leader Kim Beazley also backed
the government.
A group representing about 80% of the people of Christmas Island issued a
statement saying the government should let the refugees land. Gordon
Thomson of the Union of Christmas Island Workers, one of the groups signing
the statement, said the islanders were sympathetic to the refugees and the
crew of the freighter. They also said that the government's actions would
discourage ships from rescuing people at sea.
