Justice Alert - Sunday 2nd December Yarl's Wood Detention Centre

There will be a Justice Alert on Sunday 2nd December.

14:00 at Yarl's Wood Detention Centre - come and voice your concern
through media coverage, alert the public to what asylum seeker
detention is about. Please know that Yarl's Wood Detention Centre is
within a big MOD site in a remote location - there will not be any
Public there to influence face-to-face the influence will be via any
media reports we can get. The police have negotiated with Group4 to
allow us inside the MOD site to gather in front of the Detention
Centre - however, due to continuing construction work, that will
probably not be possible for 2nd December and in which case we will
not be within sight or ear-shot of detainees.

To Bedford - By car : take A421 from J13 of the M1. By train :
Thameslink line (45 mins from Kings Cross / St. Pancreas. To Yarl's
Wood - take the A6 north out of Bedford towards Kettering, pass
thought Clapham village, at the round-about turn right into Twinwoods
Road, drive up the hill 1.5 miles … please park safely up the top.

Hands Off Asylum Seekers - Candlelit Vigil

St Martin-in-the-Fields
Trafalgar Square
London
Thursday 6th December 2001
6pm - 7.30pm

The government has recently announced plans for a new immigration and
asylum bill, including the scrapping of the failed voucher system
(though no firm date as to when it will be scrapped, or what will
replace it is known) which provoked widespread opposition and the
introduction of a system akin to the US green card scheme enabling
skilled workers to enter Britain legally, both long overdue and
welcome measures.

However, also included are plans to introduce a potentially
stigmatising 'smart card' system for asylum seekers to access cash.
We are concerned that these 'smart cards' may be used as entitlement
cards, without which asylum seekers do not receive any support. Plans
for detaining more asylum seekers, reducing appeal rights even
further - potentially leading to an increase in unsafe decisions -
and increasing the rate of deportations to 30,000 a year signal
further tightening of asylum rights.

We are calling for a system which is fair, non-coercive and meets
Britain's responsibilities under the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees.

As the season of goodwill approaches, show your solidarity with
asylum seekers. Bring a toy for and asylum seeker child to the vigil.
