Grassroots activists to meet up in Dublin

Over the last two years there has been a growing
movement against neo-liberalism around the world
with large-scale mobilisations in cities such as
London, Prague, Seattle, Melbourne and, most
recently, Genoa. Since the protests in Seattle,
there has also been an emerging movement in
Ireland with people becoming active in struggles
against the Nice treaty, bin charges and against
the privatisation of public services, in Anti-
War demonstrations and Reclaim the Streets
actions, fighting to take back control over
their lives from the capitalist decision makers.

It is important that any network is independent
of political organisations and that it is
organised in a libertarian, grassroots manner so
that everyone involved gets an equal say in
decisions made. This hasn't always been the case
in Ireland and so, at the end of November, there
will be a grassroots gathering held in order to
bring like-minded people together with the aim
of organising a libertarian network to make
anti-authoritarian voices heard as a distinct
trend within the movement.

This network would

- Be based on the principle that people should
control their own lives, have the resources to
do so and work together as equals.

- Reject top-down and state-centred forms of
organisation in favour of open, decentralised
and democratic organising.

- Call for the abolition, not reform, of global
bodies like the World Bank and WTO, and a
challenge to underlying structures of power and

- Organise for the control of workplaces by
those who work there.

- Call for the control of communities by the
people who live there.

- Argue for a sustainable environmental,
economic and social system, agreed by the people
of the planet.

- Work together in ways which are accessible to
ordinary people, particularly women and working-
class people, rather than reproducing feelings
of disempowerment and alienation within our own

The meeting will be held over two days, on the
24th and 25th of November. The first day will be
comprised of general discussions and will start
at 11.30, in the downstairs hall of the Teachers
club, 36 Parnell Square, Dublin. The second day
will be aimed at setting up some form of formal
co-ordination structure and will be in
Spacecraft, North Wall, Dublin.

This initial meeting is called by individual
activists some of whom are involved in
organisations such as the Irish Mexico Group,
Gluaiseacht, Workers Solidarity Movement,
Anarcho-Syndicalist Federation, the Alliance of
Cork Anarchists. For a copy of their statement
