ARREST OF ECOLOGISTS WHO PROTESTED AGAINST GAZPROM

The project "Blue Stream", which the bureaucrats from "Gazprom"
want to carry out is well-known. The ecological organisations
of South Russia opposed this project because of its violating
the Environmental Law during construction and overall danger of this crazy idea
for the Black Sea. The members of Independent Ecological service
inspected the construction site of "Beregovaya" compressor station,
after which the works were sustained and the schedule was disrupted
 for a long term.

Yesterday, on 4 August, the acticists from Social-ecological Union,
youth movements "Green Lightning" and "New Wave" blocked the road
along the "Blue Stream" pipeline at Smolenskaya village, Severskiy region,
 Kresnodar province.

Four activists supported by local people blocked the way to "Gazprom"
transport. In the center of the village a big slogan appeared
"No tresopassing for Gazprom vehicles!". Some vehicles had to turn
to a bypass route. Afterwards, when police arrived, the drivers were
encouraged. One of them driving with low speed tried to scare the
environmentalists away and "clean up" the passage, but he didn't manage.
A traffic jam took place. Leaflets were distributed and signatures collected
against pipeline construction and compressor station. Then police violence
was applied to environmentalists. They tried to take away a girl from a car with force
and carry her off the road. A comrade who tried to protect her was tied
with belts and then after he was bumped a several times with his head
upon the trunk of a car he was stuffed in.

Apart from pipeline construction around Smolenskaya there is another
facility construction - compressor station "Krasnodarskaya". It's more than
a year that raisin cement dust there is a huge transport flow thru'
the village going on as instead of gas workers promises the bypass route
 was not constructed.

Tired of waiting the village residents blocked the road demanding
to stop this abuse. However, altho' this demand was supported by local administration,
the vehicles kept passing the village. Then the village residents
applied to the Social-ecological Union of North Caucasus for help.

Having tried all the possible ways to resolve the problem officially,
the radical environmentalists decided to take another course of action.
The pressure came down with arrival of a journalist from "Radio Russia".
Neither police nor Gazprom representatives who also arrived at the spot gave any comments.

Five participants of the action were arrested and taken to the local
police station. Afterwards, they were transferred to Severskiy regional
police department. By the evening one of them, under age resident of Sochi,
was released upon the journalist's responsability. She followed the guys.
Other action participants were sentenced by court to 10 days imprisonment.
They were accused of disobidience to police orders, besides the one
who was beaten by police is accused of violence towards police officer.

Everyone who could somehow influence the situation is required
to help set free the activists.
