A few thoughts on Seattle, A16 and anarchism,
I just returned from Florida yesterday where I was at the Ruckus Alternative
Spring Break Action Camp. We had a wonderful discussion on one evening around
a fire with about 30 students on what anarchism is to them, and how Seattle,
A16 and the critiques of the Blac Bloc's actions in Seattle. I would like to
share a few of those as I think they are quite exciting.
Most of us there for the discussion were between 19 and 25, many college
students, and unfortunately lacking true diversity. However, we can only work
with what we have so far. One of the major points we all seemed to agree with
was the need for creating positive solutions and alternatives to the current
capitalist system we live in. To do that we felt that community was an
essential part of that. As we build community we become more connected and
more empowered. Seattle was great because this was a start of that community
building on a massive, national and international scale, especially among
youth. We are very excited about the potentail of the youth to not only
create but bring to fruition a democratic, truly equal society that respects
diversity of all kinds, be it human or not. We also found that there were
many among us who had never really had a discussion about anarchism or
understood some of the basic ideas that many anarchists believe in, yet they
agreed and felt very much as we did. It was great to see this light bulb go
off in people's head like'' whoa, this is anarchism? I've felt like this for
a while" and see them get excited about the possibilities for the future. We
also talked about how to create a better communication structure for direct
action among students, as that was what brought many of us there. There is
also a lot of excitement for A16, including some great ideas for creative
actions and constructive outreach to local communities between now and then.
"The youth are awakening like a sleeping giant. When we fully rise our vision
will be infinite and our energy will transform the very fabric of our
society. The youth have the power!!!"
