SOLIDNET News Nş 13, 11/March/00

The transport workers of the Swedish libertarian syndicalist confederation,
SAC Syndikalisterna, have recently formed a section in the "Central Taxi"
company as well as calling a strike.

The taxi drivers oppose the agreement signed by the Swedish air-space
authorities and Remot, in practice implying a monopoly for Remot on all taxi
traffic from Stockholm's airport. Remot is formed by three taxi companies.

The air-space authorities wish to do away with "less serious" companies.
According to the transport workers section in Central Taxi and other taxi
companies with workers who will take part in the conflict, their companies
are "serious." They are connected to central switchboards, as well as
following a unified price lower than the tariff applied by the Remot
monopoly.

The syndical section points out that the monopoly will call prices to
increase, breaks anti-monopoly laws and the collective trade agreement. It
means that the taxis not included will have to take customers to the airport
and return empty. It is suspected that this agreements hides a certain
element of racism as the excluded companies have many immigrant workers.

A large number of Stockholm taxi-drivers are currently joining the SAC trade
union section and preparing themselves for action. The action started on
Friday, with fifty drivers blocking the traffic of the monopoly for an hour.
More protests are planned with more drivers taking part in other areas.
