La Jornada 15.2.2000
The European Union signed the free trade agreement with Mexico. There fights
and a march of 5000 strike supporters as the UNAM reopened for classes. The
Faculty of Science assembly decided to go back on strike. 262 students are
stil in jail.

La Jornada 16.2.2000
Pentagon officials confirmed that the Defence Intelleigence Agency is
watching 12 guerrilla groups in Mexico.
Charges against students have not been dropped, despite promises from the
rector of the UNAM. The Science faculty strike was been called off. 50 000
primary school teachers in Chiapas on strike against reforms they see as

US satellites are collecting information about drug cultivatio in Mexico,
which the PRD denounced as illegal.

Alberto Fern‡ndez Garza, president of the Employers' Federation of the
Mexican Republic (Coparmex), called for the UNAM to be broken up, in order
to reduce its budget.

La Jornada 19.2.2000
Two presumed members of the Popular Revolutionary Army (EPR) and one Federal
Army soldier were killed in a shootout in Guerrero state.
Zapatista sympathisers in Cancuc, Chiapas, denounced increased paramilitary
The UNAM authorities declared that they have 'pardoned' 329 of the 999
strikers arrested. 82 arrest warrants for strikers were cancelled by a judge.

La Jornada 20.2.2000
Hundreds of residents of Francisco I Madero took 61 police prisoner after
the police violently evicted striking students from the Escuela Normal Rural
de El Mexe. The police were stripped to their underpants, tied up and
marched through the streets before they were swapped for 376 strikers
arrested in the eviction. Good photos.

La Jornada 21.2.2000
Francisco I madero residents turned in the guns they took off captured cops,
including assault rifles and a grenade launcher, alleging that the police
violence was planned. Great photos of the cops.

La Jornada 25.2.2000
Since the signing of Nafta six years ago, salaries for workers in the
maquila factories in the duty free zones along the US-Mexican border have
fallen by 20 percent, according to a coalition of 30 workers' organisations.
The 1.3 million workers in this sector average between USD 37 and USD 66 a
week, including bonuses, according to the Women Workers' Border Committee,
which alleged systematic abuse of workers' basic rights by companies
including General Electric, Delphi (formerly General Motors, the group which
includes Opel), Lucent Technologies, Panasonic, Phillips and Sony..

La Jornada 26.2.2000
The US State Dept. reported serious human rights abuses in Mexico and a
culture of impunity among the security forces.
15 000 people marched in Mexico City to demand the release of students still
in jail.

La Jornada 27.2.2000
The Escuela Normal Rural El Mexe remained closed and students demanded the
release of five strikers still held.
Bail amounts for UNAM strikers are being set at between USD10 000 and USD20 000.

The UNAM Science Faculty was closed agan by striking students.
