ANARCHISM ADVANCING IN DIVERSITY STRIKING IN UNISON YAMAGUCHI KENJI

WHY? WHY? WHY?
The media exposure that a number of nursing home residents at a nursing
home
at Patterson Lakes were treated for scabies with baths laced with
kerosene
has opened the lid on the bankruptcy of the Federal Government's nursing

home policies. Reviewing the media reports about his incident you could
be
forgiven for thinking that what occurred is just an unusual aberration.

Well nothing could be further from the truth, what happened at Patterson

Lakes is just the tip of the iceberg of a malaise that's gripped
nursing
homes across the length and breadth of Australia. Three Federal
Government
decisions over the past eighteen months have contributed to this
pathetic
state of affairs. The deregulation of the labour market in the nursing
home
sector has meant that owners of nursing homes are now able to employ
unqualified staff to provide services that had to be provided by
qualified
staff. Self regulation of nursing homes by the private sector means
that
unacceptable behaviour at nursing homes will continue until the
behaviour is
reported by staff.

Staff members who report management practices soon find that they are
looking for a new job. The Federal government's hands off approach has
meant that unscrupulous operators have been able to cut costs and
maximise
profits at the expense of residents. The kerosene treatment, a 1930's
treatment for scabies, was just another cost cutting measure. The
Federal
Government's determination to encourage profit driven businesses to take

over nursing homes and the government's decision to reduce Federal
funding
to the nursing home sector has helped to create a climate where private
owners will cut costs to maximise profits.

It's no exaggeration to say that the nursing home sector is in a crisis
which to a large degree is due to a government applying market forces to
an
area that needs to be subsidised, controlled and run by non-profit
organisations or the public sector. Bathing residents in water laced
with
kerosene is just one simple example of how far things have deteriorated
in
the nursing home sector in Australia.

"FLUSH WITH CASH"
I'm guilty of not taking the religious sector seriously. As far as I
was
concerned the churches in Australia were in a state of decline and they
had
little or no influence on life in this country. How wrong I was in my
calculations. I never realised how privatisation of the welfare sector
has
made some church organisations very powerful entities in their own
right.

The latest addition to the Australian political landscape is "The
Australian
Christian Churches" a coalition of evangelical churches in this country.

The frightening aspect of the Australian Christian churches is the scope
of
their political program, that's right, their political program. They're

very interested in taking up the political challenge. The Evangelicals,
a
group which is spread across all Christian denominations, puts a lot of
faith in the literal translation of the bible. The Australian Christian

Church, believe that they are able to solve all of society's problems by

applying a biblical solution to those problems.

Before you dismiss this group as another group of Christian bigots,
think
again. The Evangelical arm of the Christian Church is the fastest
growing
sector of the church. More importantly, they have been able to get
their
hands on a lot of taxpayer's cash because they were at the front of the
line
when the welfare sector was privatised. This group poses a potential
threat
to radical activists in this country. It's move into the welfare sector
has
meant that it is now flush with government (taxpayer's) money. What's
disturbing about their newfound wealth is that they intend to use this
money
to launch and bankroll their campaign to make the Australian Christian
Churches a significant political force in Australia.

"IF MAN SLEEPS WITH MAN AS A WOMAN - HE SHALL BE KILLED"
(or words to that effect)
The Sydney Gay Mardi Gras has done for Christianity what the Pope has
been
unable to do, it has brought the Catholic and the Anglican Church
together.
The split brought about by Henry the VIII carnal desires has been
patched
over because of the Gay Mardi Gras. Poor old Fred Nile has had to take
a
backseat to Cardinal Clancy and the Anglican Bishop of Sydney who have
combined to voice their disgust at the Sydney Mardi Gras.

Just in case you think their objections have anything to do with the
commercial section of the Mardi Gras, think again. Their opposition is

based on a fundamental biblical opposition to same sex sexual activity.
Both the Catholic and the Anglican Church seem to have accepted that
some
people are gay. Unfortunately they now want gay people to remain
celibate
as they believe gay sex offends the sensibilities of God. How do these
learned folk know about God's will. Well they have access to the bible
that
hotch potch of myths and second and third hand reports that have little
if
anything to do with reality.

For some reason the learned clergy in the Christian hierarchy seem to
have
become fixated on the only reference to gay sex in the bible. "If man
sleeps with man as a woman - he shall be killed." When I consider the
other
inane comments in the bible, I wonder why this inane comment has
received
such prominence in the Christian Church's teaching. The problem with
the
Christian Church's poofter bashing is that it's all legal. Churches
have an
automatic exemption from Australia's vilification laws.

When you consider that the Catholic Church is the biggest private
employer
of labour in Australia you begin to wonder what real power church bigots
are
able to wield when you examine their leaders' homophobic comments you
soon
realise how deep the rot runs. The Catholic Church in Australia can
legally
refuse to employ people because they are gay, single mothers or living
with
a divorced partner. The Christian Church's foray into the Mardi Gras
spectacle is a sign that the cash they have been able to earn through
the
Federal Government's welfare privatisation schemes means that they are
flush
with funds and are confident they can reclaim some of the ground they
have
lost in Australia since the 1960's.

WHERE WERE THEY?
Have you noticed how the mass media is intent of pursuing Jeff Kennett
now
heıs a private citizen. The folk working in the mass media are working
overtime trying to crucify Kennett. Not that Iım not enjoying every
moment
of his current dilemma. "Iım no thief" he thunders as he tries to
explain
how a Victorian National Gallery Painting of Henry Bolte was found in
Jeffreyıs private residence.

What I find interesting is how the very people who hung on his every
word
and refused to criticise and expose his authoritarian rule when he was
in
power are now lining up to kick head while heıs a private citizen. The
current media response is an indication of how the media works in this
country. The Packer boys legally pay no tax on 1.25 billion dollars
profit
very little attention is paid to this important fact in the mass
media.
The Murdoch media empire sets a whole series of events in motion that
will
lead to the current Prime Minister being replaced by the Murdoch
friendly,
Deputy Prime Minister, Peter Costello nothing.

The mass media is full of stories cataloguing the vagaries of human
nature
but when it comes to the hard issues itıs found to be wanting. Why
arenıt
there any segments or articles about where real power lies, who really
makes
the decisions in this country? Well the answer is very simple, as the
people who ultimately make the decisions, own the means of
communication,
itıs highly unlikely we are going to "read all about it" The current
Kennett
media three ring circus is a classical example of how the media works.
While the people in power support the status quo, the media supports
them to
the hilt, they step out of line then wham bam thank you maıam. The mass

media in Australia has never had the courage to act as the Fourth Estate

because of the concentration of media power in the hands of a smaller
and
smaller group of players in the field.

BYE BYE MULLAHS
Twenty years after the Iranian revolution, the Mullahs are feeling the
peoplesı blowtorch. When the Iranian people overthrew the Shah of Iran
in
1979 they overthrew a 2000 year old Persian dynasty that had stayed in
power
in its later stages courtesy of the U.S.A. The Iranian people put their

faith in the Islamic revolution and the Mullahs because they believed
that
for the first time in history, they held their fate in their own hands.
The recently completed Iranian elections have almost dislodged the
Mullahs
from power. The Iranian population, 60% under the age of 25 want change

now, they want more personal freedom and they want to control their own
affairs. Although the Mullahs attempted to stitch up the election
result by
restricting the type of people who could nominate for parliament, they
werenıt able to stop the people from supporting reform candidates.
Although
the conservative Mullahs still hold ultimate power in Iran, they no
longer
enjoy the support of over 70% of the people.
Direct Action in June last year set the scene for the recent election
results. Iran is one of the few Middle Eastern countries thatıs playing

with the idea of Islamic democracy. While the west countries to support
and
bankroll authoritarian regimes in the Middle East, the Iranians are
attempting to create a new society whose structure is determined by the
people. Islamic fundamentalism has been tried and found to be a sham.
This
time it has taken the Iranian people only twenty years to dislodge an
authoritarian regime, last time it took them two thousand years. I
wonder
how long it will take the Iranian people this time to break out of the
straightjacket of Islamic democracy and embrace direct democratic
principles? Looking at their recent courageous stand itıs possible,
just
possible that it wonıt take them very long to embrace direct democracy.

ANARCHIST QUESTION AND ANSWER
Q. Will professional entertainers exist in an anarchist society?
A. Of course they will, the difference between anarchist and a
capitalist
society is that entertainment will not be a mass commodity that's
packaged
and sold to the community. In any society there are people with skills
in a
particular field. In an anarchist society they will have the
opportunity to
develop those skills and will be able to work full time in that
particular
field. Who succeeds and who fails in a particular field will not be
determined by the amount of CDs or tickets they sell, but by the number
of
people who listen and view their material.
Who uses the larger entertainment venues will be determined by the
number of
people who prebook to see their favourite artists. It would be a tragic

waste of resources, if an individual or a group booked a large venue and

only a handful of people turned up. How an entertainer is rewarded for
their efforts is another major difference between an anarchist and a
capitalist society. The ultimate reward would not be financial,
it's
based on the community's adulation and interest in particular performers

because of their skills in that area. More people would tend to turn
their
hand to music, theatre, film, painting and a variety of other mediums
because the basic necessities of life are guaranteed for each individual
in
that community. This means that people will be able to expand facets of

their personality and character that they would not be able to explore
if
they lived in a society where they had to struggle for the basic
necessities
of life.
A major problem facing an anarchist community is how will they attract
entertainers outside their community to perform inside their
communities.
As it's a cashless economy, entertainers who came across will find that
although their expenses will met by the community and their needs will
be
catered for, their isn't a pot of gold waiting for them at the end of
the
rainbow. It's quite likely that many overseas artists will not be
willing
to come in these circumstances. It's also quite likely that an
anarchist
community will not have the same need for "blockbuster" entertainment
because everybody in that community has the time and access to community

resources to develop their own talents. In such a situation it's highly

likely that the need people have for pre-packaged mass entertainment by
a
bevy of stars will disappear.
ACTION BOX
HELP A WHISTLEBLOWER!!
At the end of the day people press the buttons or program the computers
that
ultimately lead to the deaths of tens of thousands whether it's a State
decision to go to war, a corporate decision to follow a particular
economic
direction or a personal decision to slit somebody's throat, individuals
are
ultimately responsible for the decisions that are made. Society is
primed
to jump up and down when individuals kill but seems incapable of dealing

with the situation when the policies formulated and carried out by the
State
or the corporate sector result in the killings of hundreds if not
thousands.
Individuals within these organisations hide behind the State and the
corporate mask rationalising their decisions as the inevitable
consequences
of hard decisions they need to make for the good of the community and
the
State. Ultimately we need to remember it's good people with good
intentions
that allow the obscenities of the United States prison gulag to
continue.
It's good people with good intentions who participated in the slaughter
of
800,000 Tutsiıs and their moderate Hutu supporters in Rwanda in 1994 and

it's good people with good intentions who have elected the Freedom party

into office in Austria.
The essential difference between an anarchist and most other people is
that
anarchists believe in individual responsibility. Anarchists are not
able to
hide behind smoke screens created by religion, nationalism, the state or

society for their individual actions. They have nobody to blame but
themselves. The post-modern State and the corporate world have created
institutions that allow individuals to commit the most horrible crimes
in
the interests of their nation and their economic masters.
Although the individual who stands up and cries enough is enough does so
at
great personal and family risk, it is these people who are the Achilles
heel
of the post-modern States. As Anarchist activists it's our personal
responsibility to support these courageous individuals and it's our
responsibility as a movement to create a climate where individuals are
willing to stand up and expose the excesses of the post modern world.
Help
a whistleblower today and set the groundwork for creating institutions
that
are responsible to the people, not people who are responsible to
institutions.
AUSTRALIAN ANARCHIST HISTORY - 'REVOLUTION AND PHYSICAL FORCE'
(A Reply to W.R. Winspear) in the Australian Radical July-August 1889 by

Jack Andrews.
In the Anarchist Age Weekly Review (No 387) W.J. Winspear articulates a
vision of bloodless revolution in the June 1889 edition of the
Australian
Radical. Jack Andrews, a prominent Australian anarchist, responds to
Winspear's evolutionary anarchist arguments in the following edition of
the
Australian Radical.
"Will we be able to rid ourselves of the robbers and warriors without
one
last hand to hand encounter with them No! Will the revolution of the
future
be also a bloody one? Yes."
Andrews goes on to clarify what he means by bloody revolution.
"Revolution is the refusal to pay rent, the resistance to eviction, the
persistent entry upon lands, upon factories, machines, magazines, the
reiterated practice of working and keeping the whole produce, of leaving

employment and not leaving work or the workshop."
"The Revolution is no war in the common interpretation of the term."
Unfortunately Andrews gets carried away with his own rhetoric.
"Nothing in the remotest degree approaching the same universality of the

upheaval has been indicated since the fall of the Roman Empire. We are
on
the eve of the greatest event in history for thousands of years. We see
a
world about to crumble into ruins at our feet."
Although Andrews' article has flashes of brilliance he gets carried away

with his own rhetoric and doesn't come to grips with the question of
revolutionary force. He does draw a line between terror and
self-defence
and makes a coherent case for armed self-defence. It's interesting that

over 110 years later the anarchist movement is still debating the role
of
force in a revolutionary situation.

 BOOK REVIEW
THE COMMON GOOD
Noam Chomskey interviewed by David Barsamian, Odonian Press 1998,
Library of
Congress Catalogue Number 98-36584
This book has been compiled as a result of seven interviews that David
Barsamian of Alternative Radio did with Noam Chomskey in 1997. The
Material
has been compiled and edited by Arthur Naiman. The Common Good touches
on a
myriad of topics ranging from freedom to libraries, East Timor to
Mexico,
signs of progress to the magic answer.
Arthur Naiman has divided the book into five distinct sections, the
Common
Good, On the home front, Around the World, the U.S. left (and
limitations
thereof) and what you can do. If you're looking for some new gems or
indepth analysis, don't waste your time on the Common Good. If you want

lucid simple explanations about what's happening in the world around
you,
this book is the book for you. Chomskey, through Barsomian's
questioning,
is able to give a thumb nail sketch about corporate welfare, the media
crime, the Middle East and many other topics.
The Common Good gives an insight into corners of society that people
take
for granted. It gives people who have begun questioning the
cornerstones of
the communities they live in the confidence to delve into what they have

discovered. Chomskey is able, through his work, to begin the process of

questioning that is necessary if people are to change. Anarchists will
find
little they didn't know in the Common Good, other people will have their

eyes opened by the analysis that Chomskey offers in this book.
Would I buy the Common Good? - No. Would I recommend that anarchist
activists buy this book for their personal use? - No. Would I recommend

that anarchists buy this book for people that are interested in social
change and anarchist ideas - Yes.
This book's strength lies in Chomskey's ability to reduce complex
concepts
to simple truths that are accessible to anyone who cares to read this
book.
The Common Good is available for $18.00 (Australian) from Anarres Books.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION
Another hot, blistering, humid day, people scurrying from airconditioner
to
fan, waiting at bus stops, sitting in airconditioned cocoons waiting for

traffic lights to turn green. Hot still days reduce human activity to a

bare minimum. Two storey brick boxes, concrete pathways flash past,
nobody,
nothing, just bricks, concrete and the occasional iron railings. People

inside these boxes are drapped in front of fans waiting for a change.
She squatted in the sun on a brick wall, under a white parasol watching
her
father, brother, son, lover, husband or a neighbour digging out weeds.
She
squatted with her back to the road in perfect symmetry with her
surroundings. An amazing sight on a hot day in Melbourne town. It's
interesting how culture has such a profound impact on the way we walk
and
sit. What we take for granted in one part of the world can be seen as
unusual, threatening and foreign in another part of the world.
Travel anywhere in South East Asia and you'll see people patiently
squatting
performing a variety of tasks. Travel around Australia and apart from
immigrant communities from South East Asia you'll see very few people
squatting. In Australia people sit on chairs and seats or stand, they
lie
down, sit on their bums, legs straight in front of them or behind them
or
they sit on the back of their legs, few squat. The children of
immigrants
from South East Asia soon pick up the cultural non-verbal messages and
don't
squat in public. Grandmother may, but they won't.
Chairs, an integral component of Western culture, have no use in many
parts
of the world, why clutter your personal living space when you can sit on

pillows or on the ground. When the children of the sixties began their
cultural revolution sitting down on the ground was construed as an act
of
defiance. People only sat on the grass in parks, they stood, loitered
or
walked on the footpaths. When the young began to sit on the footpaths
they
mounted a direct challenge to cultural moves that were as ingrained as
the
very act of breathing. It's no wonder that the sight of our friend
squatting on a brick fence under a white parasol in Melbourne town on a
hot
day has triggered so many fundamental questions about the human
condition.

STOP PRESS - GAMBLING MANIA
Life's fascinating isn't it? For the last five to six years Victoria's
media has been pushing the pokie industry. Article after article has
extolled the virtues of the gambling industry. In between the articles
have
been sandwiched stories about people who have lost everything and have
ended
up in prison because of their gambling addiction. Unfortunately the
Victorian pokie business with extensive media support has wormed it's
way
into the suburban heartland of the state.
The pokie industry seemed to have been immune from the normal legal
responsibilities that the rest of the community are subjected to until
the
death of a 19 month old baby who was locked in a motor car at Ferntree
Gully
while his mother gambled at the local pokie outlet. Interestingly,
after a
few days of the media spotlight being shone on the unfortunate mother
(who
now faces a manslaughter charge), the harsh glare of the media has begun
to
shine on the pokie industry. Victoria has over 28,000 poker machines,
many
of them concentrated in the poorer parts of Melbourne and Victorian
Regional
Centres.
Two corporations, Tabcorp and Tattersalls, own all the machines. They
lease
out these machines to suburban clubs and hotels. If the machines do not

reach a critical turnover, they are removed from the venue. Clubs cut
corners and offer inducements to keep up their turnover; if they don't
they're looking at bankruptcy as a very real possibility if the machines
are
removed by Tattarsall's or Tabcorp.
Considering that punters only receive 87.5 cents return on every dollar
invested and considering that the longer they gamble the more they lose
it's
interesting to see the increasing amounts of money that the community is

pushing through the pokie machines. An increasing number of people have

become alarmed at the social and human consequences of this modern day
black
plague. The unnecessary death of a small child seems to have galvanised
the
community into action and has partially broken the financial hold the
gambling industry has on the media. Interestingly it's the Murdoch
media
that's taken a lead on the issue. Considering the amount of money the
Packer boys (the other Australian media moguls) have invested in
gambling,
it's no surprise they haven't been smitten with the same anti pokie zeal

that the Murdoch media is displaying.
