Activists in the Otways have been blockading in the Wye River coupe at Mud
Road for the past 9 days. With the support of literally hundreds of local
residents, who have formed the Wye River Action Group, the Forest Rescue
activists are attempting to gain the governments intervention in the DNRE
decision to allow clearfelling to commence despite the depressing results of
the Spotted Quoll Report being released last week.

Activists have been blockading with "possums" in tree sits and "black
wallabies" in the bushes. Work was stopped most of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday the DNRE called Work cover to the site. They assessed
the place as an unsafe work place as long as the tree sit was in the trees.
No work occurred on Thursday and then Friday the DNRE's Ian Shurval approved
work to continue around the tree sit! As a woman sat 50 metres up a tree in
the backside of the log landing trees were felled and dragged around her all
day, some trees hundreds of years old! On Saturday morning the DNRE had
another sit to contend with cabled through the machinery. No trees were
felled until the Police Search and Rescue came to the site and secured the
sit and cut the cable. Work then occurred all afternoon with a person in the
back landing trees and a person in the frontloading area. Trees were dragged
with heavy machinery as close as 10 metres form the tree with a person up
it. Both activists had no lines to descend and no opportunity to discuss the
situation as no liaison was allowed. No cameras were allowed and no
communication, water or food was allowed to be taken to either people in the
tree sits! This is disgraceful behavior on behalf of the Department,
arrogant and dangerous. Not to mention the breaches of human rights...

Wye River is almost an hour closer to Melbourne than Riley's, it's just
behind Lorne and is beautiful old growth forest in a spectacular setting.
Please come down to the forest and help us out there to keep the pressure up
on this coupe. We can't let the DNRE get away with this sort of behavior!

The Quoll report, conducted as part of the RFA and commissioned by DNRE was
then concealed during the public consultation phases of the RFA process. The
results showed serious decline in the species population, recommending the
animals status be upgraded to critically endangered, the principal causes
for this decline were seen to be clearfell logging and 1080 baiting. The mud
Road coupe is identified as Quoll Habitat by the DNRE on the Wood
Utilization Plan (WUP) for this season, and yet despite this logging was
authorized to commence. Mr. John Roff, Head Forester for the Region who
attended the coupe to meet approximately 50 residents and activists last
Sunday said that the public consultation had occurred last year for the
logging of this area and that was that!! Regardless of the fact none of the
residents present had been aware the consultation had occurred, the only
thing that would warrant him intervening to save this coupe would be new
information. When reminded of the, leaked at this stage, Quoll report, his
comment was that until it was official he did not consider it relevant,
meaning let the forest fall. So now it has been released we are demanding he
act on the findings and immediately call a halt to the clearfelling of this
important habitat

Activists are in the process of constructing a tree vigil opposite DNRE's
offices in the city. In support of activists in the Otways and East
Gippsland city activists have begun a vigil to condemn the violence in the
forests and the RFA's creating the escalating conflict in the forests.
Minister Garbutt must stop the RFA, take control of her department and cease
the woodchipping of our most precious forests. How much more serious does it
need to get before she will act?
