 Background Information:

On Tuesday February 1st, strike breakers and police
brutally attacked students from the Autonomous
University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. 248
non-violent students and their supporters were
arrested and are now in jail, including parents who
went to support their children. Arrest warrants have
been issued for more than 400 hundred more students
 involved in the strike.

The strike (La Huelga) opposing the privatization of
public education by the Mexican government has now
shut down the hemisphere's largest university for
nine months. This unprecedented organizing by the
students of UNAM has received overwhelming support
from a broad coalition of progressive groups in
 Mexico and worldwide.

On December 11th 1999, over 10,000 students of UNAM
surrounded the embassy of the U.S.A. in Mexico City
demanding (1) the release of all those arrested in
Seattle during the WTO ministerial talks, and (2)
the immediate release of Mumia Abu-Jamal. Police
violently broke up the demonstration and arrested 98
of the protesters. Most were released within the
week but many continue to be harassed daily by local
 and federal law enforcement officials.

Mexico's students for the right to a free education,
