Protest Against Far-Right entering Austrian Government

Protest called by Anti-Fascist Action and the Socialist Party

A picket will be held at the Austrian Embassy to protest against the entry 
of the fascist Freedom Party into government in Austria. It is expected 
that the coalition agreement, with the Conservative People's Party, will be 
announced in the next day or so. 

Jorg Haider's 'Freedom Party', which came second in last October's general 
election, was founded in 1950s as an alliance of former SS men and other 
Nazis. Haider has transformed this openly fascist party into a strong 
political force by a mixture of vicious anti-immigration rhetoric and 
economic populism. Haider's anti-immigrant campaigns have forced previous 
governments to introduce racist immigration laws and by setting the 
political agenda the Freedom Party has pulled all other parties further to 
the right. Recent opinion polls show the FPO at 32%, higher than all other 
parties and a 5% rise in support since the general election in October. 

Haider and the Freedom Party are putting a 'respectable' face on fascism, 
by playing down their real views. Haider has said that he admires the 
Waffen SS, described concentration camps as 'punishment camps' and said 
that Walter Reder, an Austrian War Criminal found guilty of the murder of 
1,800 Italian civilians, was 'a soldier who had done his duty'. The 
Austrian Green Party has described Haider as 'the foster father of right-
wing terrorism'. When Haider sued over this statement the Austrian Supreme 
Court ruled against him. 

The entry of a far-right party to government in any part of Europe has 
obvious implications for Ireland, given the increased racism and anti-
immigrant views being expressed by Irish people. We call on all progressive 
groups and individuals, anti racist campaigners and others to support the 
picket at the Austrian Embassy on Thursday 3rd.

The Austrian Embassy is on Ailesbury Road. Get the 10 or 46A bus [from 
Nassau Street] to Donnybrook Church. The Embassy is just behind the Church -
 You can't miss it.
