Riv Murarna prisoner conference in Stockholm evaluated

The prisoner struggle conference Riv Murarna (Tear Down the Walls),
Stockholm October 27-29, has now been evaluated.=20

The response was far greater than we, the organisers of the conference, had
expected. Over 300 people took part. The participants were mixed =AD ranging
from scholars, prisoners and activists and included a demonstration. The
conference was well received. A lot of people have contacted us after the
conference and have had only positive things to say. At the same time, the
media covered the event extensively and wrote about the topics raised at
the conference. The major TV stations mentioned the conference and aired
pictures, mainly from the demonstration (and there wasn=92t even a riot!).=
=20

Since the conference there has occurred a one day strike in most prisons
against the expensive phone system, something that makes it almost
impossible for prisoners to keep in touch with their children and
relatives, especially if these live in other countries.=20

The conference has unequivocally forwarded the discussion and critique of
the current criminal policy. Some people at the conference where there to
listen while others got involved in the actual work. In any case, we
believe that it functioned well as a meeting point for a lot of people with
different backgrounds and traditions. Groups working with refugees made
contacts with former prisoners, scholars writing about the society of
control had to explain themselves to new activists and so on.=20

A number of working groups were formed at the conference around the
following issues:=20
- the situation of women in prison=20
- the violence of (above all) private security guards towards people of
colour and other minorities=20
- relatives of prisoners=20
- co-ordination of solidarity work with political prisoners=20
- the refugee situation, with special focus on the EU summit in Gothenburg,
Sweden in June 2001=20
- co-ordination with prisoner organisations (special councils with an
official status) that exist in most prisons=20

The working groups will work on their own.=20

About the organisers:
Andra Chansen (Second Chance) is first and foremost a resource network. Our
ambition is to be a critical force in the politics of criminal justice and
to support other people working with the issues on both sides of the prison
walls.=20

No one is free until all are free!
