Court victory for Tent Embassy on Cockatoo Island =96 for now=20

On Wednesday 13 December an application by the Australian Government for
immediate eviction was adjourned until the following Tuesday, pending
further submissions.=20
On Wednesday 13 December 2000 (yesterday) Isabelle Coe spoke for the
Aboriginal Tent Embassy of Cockatoo Island in the Supreme Court of New Sout=
Wales. The =91Commonwealth of Australia=92 (ie the Federal Government) is t=
to evict the tent embassy from Cockatoo Island =96 in spite of the fact tha=
the land has lain unoccupied for several years.=20

The Aboriginal tent embassy reclaimed Cockatoo Island on 20 November 2000,
and they are now working to heal the sickness that has been brought to the
island. On what is undoubtedly the gem of the Sydney Harbour, parts of the
island have been contaminated by its former use as a shipyard and naval
military base =96 which the government is using as a pretext to evict the
residents. At the same time, there has been no adequate dialogue or even
disclosure of what risks have been identified, and whether they in fact pos=
a danger to the tent embassy where they remain.=20

The Aboriginal tent embassy maintains the sacred fire, and performs a
smoking ritual of cleansing for visitors to the island. The message spoken
by Isabelle Coe is of peace and healing, and of true determination.=20

The situation at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy is not nearly so dire as the
government is attempting to make out; the absence of cars probably makes fo=
cleaner air and a safer environment than the streets of Sydney.=20

The presence of the Aboriginal tent embassy on Cockatoo Island may be an
important step for this country to reconcile with its past and bring an end
to a 212 year war. But for now it is subject to the vagaries of the legal
system as the government threatens to institute criminal proceedings agains=

The matter has been adjourned until Tuesday 19 December 00 before the
Supreme Court of New South Wales.
